Fiscal Fostering??

Does anyone know of a foster program / shelter program that matches people in dire need who are considering giving up their Newf .... to those who can spare a few dollars a month to help them keep them-?

The thought of giving up my Newf or other wonderful friend because I am short $50 a month, or whatever, is heartbreaking.

Anyone?

Do they need dog food? Vet care and medicine? There are many groups and private donors that would help with specific needs but none I know of that just have people hanging out with extra cash at the ready. I may be wrong, I hope I am.

I guess I'm thinking of people willing to help out when someone in dire straits is giving up a beloved pet and is obviously distraught about it but has no options due to finances or the economy. Do any rescue groups do this (and of course 'vet out the people asking for money)? Just wondering.

Canadian Newf Rescue-?

I don't believe I know of any rescue groups that do this, but I've heard of groups that can help lower income families with food and vet care, I just can't think of any of them at the moment.

We have here in Massachuttes NCNE (Newfoundland Club of New England) CT That Newfoundland Place ( Cathy Derench) will both help folks keep there dogs, rather then give up.

Locally we have a rescue (for all types of dogs) that you can apply to for help with big vet bills and with food. There is one woman in town who galvanizes around this and gets all sorts of donations. Lovely.

I now have three "foster dogs" That are still with their owners and Mike and I attend to the vet care and feed these dogs, we also have them when the owners have to go away to hospital. My three friends are aged pensioners and I got the dogs via our RSPCA when I was looking for asistance dogs in Shelters. I would ask why the dogs were there and I was told, because one owner had to go to Hospital and one owner had to give her dog up, because she could not afford to feed the dog...the third one sort of happened..I won't have anymore at present, because I am feeding 7 dogs, but I feel it is better to do this. I could donate money, but these people love and adore their dogs. It would be great if there were official set-ups, but they would cost and someone would need to be paid to do a job..Ask your Spca or your Shelters if any dogs came in due to inability to afford the dog, I am sure you will find some......LOL......We also seem to be feeding our friend, with extra veggies and aggs from our place. The good thing is, when we go away, one of them feeds our horses and chicken/ducks/geese. Which are fed twice a day. I would never leave the gang of four with them though. I get a lot of enjoyment and friendship out of doing this.
I am also lucky, because one of the vets does most of their treatment for those three at just cost, really mostly free

I've been preaching for years that rescue should have some way of helping these wonderful people who just need a little help. Why not do this, rather than take a dog out of his loving home, from his family, into a totally different envieronment and a nelife? Sometimes it is needed, but other times it is not. If only soneone would create - a "Free Kibble" site for owned dogs - free kibble for those owners who need it.

And if only there would be some help with vet fees for some, especially the elderly

And if only there were a vet that would DO stuff for free.

Sometimes I think I'd like to get a vet degree and spend the rest of my working life doing this. But I haven't even paid off my current student loans ($80k worth!!) and I retire in 15 years. * sigh *

I agree - Bless them...and question the others who won't give discounts for rescue, and charge $50 as soon as you walk in their door. It adds up fast after that,

I have worked in a rescue shelter and honestly felt the same way... The head of the rescue said they didnt do that becasue too many people tried to take advantage of them... Honestly I dont think its that there are people taking advantage. I think its just that there are ALOT of people in need of vet care assistance. When my dobe had bloat the vet said I had to pay the bill up front or they said they would euthanise him for me for free to save him the pain of dieing from bloat... I didnt have that kind of money just sitting around (2k) and if it wherent for the people pulling together from my work I would have lost him. I think vets should have more in the way of financing. I could have afforded up to 100 bucks a month... but that wasn't an option. And where I was in Kansas that was the ONLY vet in a 10 hour driving distance that could do a surgery like this. It was horrible.

I think most vets need to reasses, and realize these are beloved family members. A hospital wouldnt say "sorry your son will have ot die because you dont have the money/insurance." There are some states (like KS, OK, other midwest) that are in dire need of some understanding vets. very few have the equipment and know how to deal with emergancies effectivly. and those that do wont help until you pay in full.

But I do aggree. Rescues should be more willing to help dogs stay in their loving homes... for certain instances and people.

T-Raft I think what you do for those families is amazing. you sound like a wonderful person! :) hats of to you.

Actually people do die because they do not have the money or insurance for treatment. By law hospital emergency rooms are required to stabilize patients but nothing more. Vets are not the bad guys most of the time. They are trying to make a living also. We don't expect mechanics to fix rescue organization's cars for free or the electric company to discount teh cost of power for the shelters. Those vets who do favors for rescue groups do so out of the kindness of their hearts and should be thanked.

Many vets do offer a helping hand to rescues. But I wasnt speaking just of help for rescues. I meant more for the general public and in emergancy situations... Sure a hospital wont give you chemo for free... but if you walk into a hospital hemoraging to death, they stablize you. I wouldnt expect them to give hand outs, but some payment plan options would be nice. Some vets DO offer this, but not all, and less to none in some areas of the United states... In the situation of a vehicle or power, I can aggree they are running a business and expect compensation... but it could be argued that they arent standing in front of a life or death situation. Vets choose to deal in a buisiness that involves living creatures... and many choose to overlook that. Equally there are those that choose to help where they can... but honestly those that don't are loosing little to none setting up a payment option for those who cant afford to drop 2-3k on a life saving emergancy procedure. So why dont more choose to do this? I'd even accept a quick creadit check with out complaint... I think most people would if it opened up their options to save a pet.
