Fireworks help please!

My Newf-mix is terrified of fireworks. He whimpers and whines when he hears them going off in our neighborhood. We plan to be home on July 3 & 4 with our dogs, close up our house, turn on the AC, and have radios and TVs turned on. Is there anything else we can do? I have heard from "experts" that I shouldn't coddle him when he whines and basically just leave him be and ignore him. But that is soooo hard!

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Have you tried Rescue Remedy? You can get it at the Health Store.

There are several here who do use it with success, perhaps they'll chime in.

I have always taken my dogs outside and played their favorite game with them acting as if I can't hear anything different. It takes them a few minutes, but eventually, they have always assumed that since it doesn't seem to be bothering me, it doesn't bother them either.

With Kyra, it was tug of war with a rope attached to a tennis ball. Now she doesn't pay any attention to the fireworks.

If you have..in the main..inside/live with..furkids..there are a number of very good suggestions that have been given,,on various threads..about noise. Since HB..is an outside furkid..and she has been allowed to be, as am I..close to the real world..I have to just live through it..with her, by bringing her inside..until it has been quiet..for a fairly long period. Throughout our year..day in, and day out..her hearing which is as almost all canines, super-adept..at hearing so much more than we do..is a powerful tool in our time..in the woods, and the general outdoors. Her hearing 'responses'..could have been tweaked perhaps..but..I prefer her ability to respond to all scent, all sound..as a safety mechanism ..for us. Good luck with your preps and the evening.

I agree acting normal, and not showing them it's a big deal works pretty well. Plus giving them something to occupy their might brain pans should distract them from their fear/apprehension.

Moose is terrified of thunder storms and fireworks too. We've had good luck with Rescue Remedy when we can be there. If we can't be around we've resorted to Valium on occasion.
Another thing that helped a little bit was putting one of my son's old T-shirts on Moose. Apparently the smell of my son and the feel of the T-shirt helped most.

We don't baby Moose but do try to interact matter of factly with him. He seems a bit better this summer. If I'm not home when a storm hits, I'll get here and find him shaking.

Last year he would be bloody from trying to dig a hole to hide in with his nose. He would frequently have messed somewhere as well.

I think the Rescue Remedy or Valium and getting through the storms calmly is slowly helping him to improve.
