For now we opted to go with the kit lens of 18 - 135. Seemed like a good compromise for starters. I am curious how some of my older lens will work. Will have to use them in manual mode though.

As long as your lenses are not pre-AI or F3AF, you should be able to use them just fine. If you have any pre-AI or F3AF lenses DO NOT mount them, as they can damage the body. Here's a link to a compatability chart, showing the functions available for all Nikkor lenses cross referenced to the different Nikon Bodies-

Nikkor lense compatability

Regarding the 18-135mm kit lense, I've read reviews across the board on that one, but I like mine just fine, thank you very much, and it is the lense I usually use as a walking around lense. YMMV.

P.S. It's nice to have someone else on the dark side with me...

Here's a link to a plethora of Nikkor lense links at Nikonians.org. I am registered there as "village idiot" :D

Thanks for the links. My lenses are compatible. The will probably be fine outside in fairly constant conditions.

It was not really a hard choice to come to the dark side, once I started reading reviews and features. Probably have more features than I will ever use. Being able to play with my old lenses and filters is a plus.

Cant believe how cheap memory is now. 2G for 49.00

Where did you get memory for 49.00?? I have not blown out my 2 gig card even shooting RAW high quality, but another card would be nice...

Let me know what you think. I'm thinking about it maybe. I just got a new used lens in yesterday for my Nikon that's considered a pretty good lens that Nikon had discontinued. Played with it a little bit last night and was impressed and lens was in excellent shape.
