Fencing suggestions

In anticipation of moving (if the bank plays nice) the property we are interested in has no fencing. It is very wooded and we would like to fence a large area without ruining the views. Wondering what your thoughts are about wireless fencing?

I have no experience, but using a shock collar long ago, it did not always make contact. Also, as they say, a electronic fence may keep your dog in, but doesn't keep others (undesirables) out. The other thing to consider if the dog breaks the fence line, it makes it difficult for them to return. I guess I am against electronic fences based on what I have read here in newf.net

We lost one of our JRTs for three weeks once because of what Leonard mentioned - the neighbor's dog came onto our property, taunted Boof into chasing her through the fenceline, and then he was too afraid to cross back.

Same thoughts here.. If your dog is outside just doing it's business it will probably stay in, but it will not keep other animals out (aren't you moving to CO? Bears, coyote wolves??). Also like Nessa said, they can run through it when excited and they probably will not come back inside the fence when the excitement is over. I would not trust one or own one. We have welded wire where we don't want to obstruct our lake view and 6' chain link in their potty area

I used the invisable fence for several dogs in the same type of situation. It wouldn't have been practical to put a full fence around the property. I had an acre that was over half woods and put the fence around the whole yard and gardens. It worked great for 13+ years! We were very diligent with the training and never had a case where they ran through it. Over the years there we used it with a German Shepard, Golden Retriever and my Akita mix. Once they learned the fence lines they were border trained. We had a dog run or they stayed in the house when we were gone, so they were out in the yard while we were with them or at home to monitor any activity.

Thanks, guys. Appreciate it. I don't think we'll go with the electronic idea. I just saw this one on-line, anyone familiar with best friend fence?

That is almost the same as the welded wire fence we use on the lake side of the yard except ours is metal

If you Newf is going to jump against it you will need to cement the vertical posts in like I think Donna K. does. Ours don't jump against it. Just seeing it is enough to keep them in, though they are not left unattended. Ours is against a split rail fence that was there from the neighbors.
You can see it here

We have a 6 ft. welded metal fence attached to our weathered picket fence. It does not obstruct our view, or look bad. We did have to install some metal posts at intervals to attach the fencing to.
