Eye issues

Yesterday Willow woke up with sticky gunk in her right eye so I cleaned it off and decided to keep an eye on it. She had some stuff in her eye throughout the day but this morning her eye was stuck shut. When I woke her up she freaked out in her crate and pawed her eye/ rubbed it on the ground before I could stop her to get it open. The stuff is slightly yellow in color. I am taking her to the vet this afternoon but wondered if anyone else has had experience with this and what I can do to help her. She acts like it is bothering her and her eye is red so I know something must be irritating it.

That used to happen to me as a child, my mother used to use witch hazel to soften up the crust and wipe it away, it also helped with any inflammation but I would be careful around the eyes. She could have something in it but I think I'd have the vet look at it if it didn't go way after a few days of wiping (JMO)

Sounds like conjunctivitis. It's like pink eye. Maggie got this once and some antibiotic eye drops cleared it right up. She could also have gotten something in her eye that has irritated it and needs to be rinsed.

You can try rinsing really well with saline. But if the goo coming out is yellow, it's more likely an infection.

Be careful as its VERY contagious if that is, in fact, what she has. You can get it too. Wash your hands after you clean her up...

Alright so we went in and we were given antibiotic/steroid eye drops that we have to put in her eye four times a day, wish me luck with that one. Also we went in and some woman with golden doodle puppies in a crate was in the waiting room and said "oh she's so cute but she has to shed a lot right? Ugh I could never deal with that" and when we went to weigh her she said to the woman she was with "I bet she weighs 130" to which I replied "she better not." She weighed in at 113 lbs to which the woman replied "I bet it's all that hair". Of course the woman breeding designer mix breeds has a problem with hairy, drooling dogs.

I love it when people say stuff like that. Basically they're saying, "You're dog is great and all, but it's also gross and filthy." Nice back-handed compliment, lady.

Good luck with the eye drops!

When we took Elvis in for his yearly exam a lady walked in carrying an 8 week old mastiff puppy. She was afraid to come far into the waiting room because "of that giant black dog". Even the receptionist rolled her eyes and said "Um, ma'am, really?!?"

It was so backhanded and it took everything I had not to come back at her about her dogs but I held it in and thankfully we were called into a room quickly. Also last night Willow was really dramatic about the eye drops by either laying on her side with the eye pressed against the floor or sitting and using the wall as a shield it took both my husband and I to give them to her. Today I think she figured out they don't hurt because she just sits there and takes it while giving you the "how could you do this to me" eyes.

you can also try pulling out the skin below her eye, sometimes that pops the bottom out a bit and lets you put the drops in a little easier, especially if she's having issues with you dropping it right on to the eye.

Last time I was at the vet (to get Loki's staples removed), there was a nice little girl who came up and asked if I would read her one of the books on the side table. I did, and she loved it, and we were about to start a second book when Loki came out from the back. He's only a year old, so he's not HUGE yet, but he's very big and I'm still working on training him not to greet people so enthusiastically. He ran up to the little girl happily and she crawled on the back of her seat and curled up and didn't talk...poor little thing!

Haha aw poor girl I know they can be a bit intimidating when they're excited. Her eye is doing really well we give her one drop four times a day and it has had minimal discharge and isn't red anymore. She doesn't fight us to put them in but she tries to disappear when she sees the bottle come out. One time in particular was funny because she squeezed herself between the wall and the end table with her butt facing out so she thought we couldn't get to her. She was wrong haha.

Glad she's better. Gotta give a girl credit for trying...Sounds Just like my Gabriel when he was little. He would try to hide between the end of the sofa and the wall, not realizing his tail and his big ol' brillo butt were giving him away...
