excessive drooling- sudden

Hi, my 5 year old, healthy Newf boy just started drooling a lot today. His chest is all wet, and front legs. It is not slime drool or foam, at all. Everything else is normal. No stomach issues. Big appetite. Walked fine. Acting fine. It is like the saliva is being made but not swallowed fast enough, it is all coming out of his cheek flap at the bottom of the fold. He is swallowing a lot. He just ate a full dinner, I threw in a gas x just in case. Won't hurt. Why would he suddenly not be able to keep up with his saliva?

Thanks a lot in advance. -Michelle
He has not eaten anything different, at all.

Thanks. He ate a bone last night, well not splintered or anything, but gnawed off a lot of a raw cow leg bone. He stopped drooling after about 2 hours. No other symptoms except a bit less active.

Thanks again.

This happened with Kona one day last month.... was really worried! It stopped after a couple hours and haven't see it since. Not sure what it was, but glad it was over!

Hi Michelle,

Avlon my 10yr old Newfy just started this over the last two months. It does go away on it's own after about an hour or two. Vet gave her Sucalfate tablets that dissolve in a syringe and then I squirt in her mouth.

Our Newfie has started doing this today, he's 7 months old and his chest is soaked, his face and chin totally drenched. We thought it was just the drool starting to begin properly but it doesn't seem right as its excessive amounts, should we be worried? He seems OK in himself

Also check under his tongue... Max had a blocked salivary gland and it caused rivers of drooling (it was infected).

Hi just wanted give the feedback from our experience with the drooling. We took our pup to our usual vets who checked to see if anything was stuck which he couldn't see. He pescribed him an anti inflammatory drug just guessing the drool was down to some pain somewhere. I wasn't happy with that so sought a second opinion yesterday. The vet suspected something stuck right at back of throat so he was put under sedation. The vet was brill he spent hours on him checking everywhere. Saw no stuck items but did find an abscess in his soft palate where liquid and food was gathering. Eveywherr surrounding its all
His throat and tonsils are aggressively swollen. He suspects it's a stick injury maybe some thing got stuck and dislodged but left injury behind. He's on anti biotics and anti inflammatorys now, infection has already started brewing. still excess drool in the bucket loads but at least we got to the bottom of it and thank god I got that second opinion!

I think Avlon must of had a sore in her throat or an ulcer in her stomach. After a round of meds and upping her Pepcid to 2x a day she has had no issues.
