Sven, our almost 8 year Newf, scratches his front elbows ALOT he's been doing it for quite a while. We just thought he had dry skin so we started adding Flax seed oil to his food (he loves it BTW).
Anyway my wife took him to the Vet without me, for an ear infection. She told the Vet about the elbow thing and the vet gave him Rimadyl. My wife didn't know about the problems that some dogs have had with it. Anyway as soon as I got home I told her and we never gave him any of it.
Is there another good arthritis medication?
The vet recommended having him sleep on a pad, but he likes to sleep on the cold hardwood or linoleum, which irritates the elbows.
