Eating Xmas Ornaments

I joined this forum just today. Shortly after I completed the registration my 8-month old newfie, Zatara, gave me a reason to post my first message.

He chomped on one of the Christmas tree ornaments. It was one of those delicate glass-like ones and it crushed into several pieces in his mouth. I stopped him immediately (after the first chomp, I think) and I don't think he swallowed any of the pieces, but I had an awful time digging them all out of his mouth. Even his drool flaps had pieces lodged in them. I checked his mouth several times and did not see any cuts. I sure hope I got them all!

He is very inquisitive and likes to learn about things by tasting them. Is this something he will grow out of (the tasting part, that is
)?

Welcome to the board! Christmas trees can be a scary thing with a pup around. I have a 1 yr. old newf, Rory, and I did not put bulbs on for fear of a problem. But I think as long as you think you got all the pieces out of Zatara's mouth, he should be OK. You would know if he still had a piece in his mouth as he would probably be trying to chew it. Just watch for signs of distress in the next few days and if you think there is a problem you should put a call in to the vet. But most likely he should be OK since you caught him so early.
Let us know how he is doing.

Welcome to the board!

I think they grow out of the eating-things stage, it's hard for me to say as Rory is 2 and will still grab things...but she doesn't really eat them now, whereas she used to chew some things up. Actually, she did get into a bag of foreign medication a few months ago and ate lots of pills...that certainly caused a lot of panic and a trip to the vet, quick smart!

To answer your question, yeah, I think it does get better. But I guess curiosity will still sometimes get the best of them, no matter how old they are!

Well, he seemed to be doing fine after the first taste, but then this evening he got into the trash (we forgot to close the door) and fished out the rest of the ornament (as well as some oreo cookies).
I don't know how much he got this time. So far he's acting like he feels okay.

if you think he has swallowed some glass, give him some fresh bread to eat. The dough can sometimes mix in with the glass and coat it therefore protecting the stomach and intestinal lining.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I gave him some bread -- no trouble getting that down. So far he seems fine. His appetite is good and he is as perky as usual.
