ear infections

I have a customer whose dog has the worst ear infections I've ever seen - for years. She had taken the dog to the vet and tried many different meds, ointments and food. Nothing worked. Last week she brought the dog in for grooming and the ears were perfect, not black goop, as nice and pink as could be. I asked her what she did. She said she used the essential oil frankincense. She just rubbed it on the inside of the ear flap near the ear canal. Thought I would pass this on in case someone would want to try it.

We are going to have to try that with Coulson! He is constantly getting ear infections. It's a constant battle and meds only temporary work. This would be awsome if it works!

Wow!! That would be amazing! Poor Olive always has some type of ear ailment. I'm always explaining to my groomer and vet that I really do love and take care of her since her ears look or smell like I don't give a hoot about her.

If someone has a good source for this...please share. Sometimes buying stuff on line feels like buying the proverbial snake oil.

My niece is into oils will check with her and see if she has this for Sarah and where to buy.

ok she got back to me. I dont' use oils but sounds kinda expensive, it is supposed to last 3-4 months if you use just one drop. she has it for 15ml for $70.00.

I really want to try this for Sarah so if anyone can find cheaper or if that is a good deal let me know. :)

That's amazing! We struggled with ear infections for over a year. We started getting protein blocker injections last month and her ears are doing much better. However, we have to go to the vet monthly for the injections, which isn't always so easy with a 100lb dog. Looking forward to learning more about this oil.

We always use mometamax too but it can cause hearing problems with long term use. I just used this with my Sarah a couple days ago for her ear, it does work wonders fast.

Does anyone have any tips for applying medication, ear wash or drops to a non-compliant Newf? My husband took McGee into the Vet today. I could smell his ears yesterday so I new he had to go in. Both ears have bacterial infections - two different bacteria. They had to sedate him to get him to cooperate. One bacteria can be treated with some meds they will insert that last for a week. The other needs a different med and the Vet is sending home some pills to relax him so we can administer it daily. My husband went to the Vet so I didn't get to hear about these "relaxing" pills and I am skeptical and worried.

Thanks for the link. We have to take him back for a recheck and he could get a 2nd dose then.

He was so dopey last night that he didn't even eat his dinner. We'll see how he feels today if we need to use the medication to get the other medication in.

We also talked about changing he allergy medication. They are going to order the new shot Cytopoint made by the same company as Apoquel. Maybe this will work better for him. Apoquel is keeping him from itching but didn't stop his ears from getting inflamed and then infected.

Have you tried warming the meds gently, like you would a baby's bottle?

Also, if you can get one person to hold onto a treat while you medicate, that sometimes helps. Has to be a very high value treat and the person doing the treating has to hang onto it, so the dog is trying to get it out of their hand, but can't quite get the whole thing in one quick bite. The person medicating needs to be fast, so have everything ready to go.

Don't forget to make it as "fun" as possible. Be happy, relaxed and praise the snot out of him. Play with him and make this part of the game. When the deed is done, go immediately back to playing so he doesn't have time to sulk.

Thanks for the tips. I didn't think of warming the cleaning solution so it's not so shocking. We tried the treat thing but we may have to up the value of the treat!

We tried osurnia, two different times but didn't work on Raven's ears so we ended up with malbodex and sporinax tablets.helped but now she's off them it's returning.

Jeannie did your client apply the frankincense oil neat to the ear or in a oil carrying solution.

I called our Vet about the Osurnia but unfortunately that med treats a different bacteria. We are on the 2nd type of sedation as the acepromazine gave him diarrhea. Now he's getting trazadone. We manage to get one ear at a time before he fights us off. Were trying to only mildly sedate him not zonk him out. Hopefully this is going to work. Researching these sedatives has been interesting. It has made me think that he might benefit from some doggy Prozac. Some of his OCD chewing stoped while he has been on the sedatives. I don't want him sedated but the manic energy he puts into chewing his moose antler can't be good for his teeth. Also the doggie Prozac may help with his fear aggression. He'll never be a dog park Newf but to be able to ride in the car without going crazy nuts when driving by another dog might be nice.

We took McGee in for his follow up ear check and 1 of 2 of the bacteria had cleared up. He didn't have to be sedated so I guess his ears feel much better. Ironically it was the bacteria that we were treating with the twice a day medication that was gone and not the stuff the Vet put in his ears. The Vet put more of the weekly medication and will more than likely dose him again next week and then in 1 1/2 months.
