Dyson Verdict

Well, I bought a Dyson Animal and have had it about a month now, doing a test drive, so to speak. The first week I decided I didn't need it. It just seemed unnecessary to spend all that money for this house, which is small, and not one room even has wall-to-wall carpeting. Like I bought a machine that I didn't think I'd ever utilize fully. Well, with Christmas around the corner and all the last minute stuff to take care of, the vacuum didn't get returned that week, or the week after. Of course I continued to use it. And got used to the strange noises it made. And figured out how to properly attached the wand so the hose didn't kink (duh). Then I discovered that if I vacuum the small throw rugs with one slow pass on each side, they don't bunch up at all. And then I started vacuuming the kitchen floor and found out it really does a better job than sweeping (!!). And that my house didn't have that just-vacuumed odor anymore. And that I could get into corners and under stuff without having to move everything. The best part was when I washed my floors. Usually, after sweeping, I'd never dare dump the water down the drain, only outside because of all the dog hair. The last thing that convinced me to keep this sucker was the fact that after washing the floor, I did NOT have to wait until the floor dried so I could sweep up all the leftover/stuck dog hair anymore. That was the deciding factor, it proved that this thing was worth every penny I paid for it. Another nice feature is Kala isn't nearly as afraid of it as she was of the old vacuum, that also made me feel good. Now she doesn't think the monster machine is out to get her. I'll vacuum almost daily, something I haven't done in years. I do not regret getting this vacuum now at all. I love it, it's staying...
Oh, when I considered getting a less-expensive model, I noticed that they all have filters that need to be replaced. I was surprised that those filters usually run between $18-25 a piece. Not an issue with the Dyson.

Thanks for the write up. I keep debating whether it's time to trade in my old vac for one of these.

I love the dyson also! I had wall to wall carpeting up until a few months ago and it's a must for carpets. Now I have hardwood and it's not as bad because I can just sweep the floors, but it's nice to go over it with the vaccuum to really suck the dirty out of all the crevices.

I LOVE mine! I have 2 kids, 4 dogs, 2 cats and 1 hairy husband. I struggled with several of those vacumes that need filter replacement for years. They just couldn't cut it at my house. I have no complaints about the Dyson. It does exactly as it claims. It picks up everything and never looses power. I figure the cost balances out when you figure you don't have to buy filters and you don't need to buy a new vacume for a long, long time (none of my others lasted more than a year). I do also have a swiffer vac and a Bissel Flip It for my hard floors. They are a great necessity as well.

I was looking at them and I noticed there were three (Dyson Animal) in different price ranges. I didn't have time at that point to see what the difference was, does anyone know? I almost have enough bonus points on my American express card to get one. Since we now have Yogi, I won't be flying anywhere. I might as well use them for something I really want. Can you believe I am trading a vacation for a vacuum...I think I've lost my mind

A great place to buy is www.heartlandamerica.com. They sell refurbished models - and they come with the same warranty as the new ones. Ours is going on 3 years old (shhh don't tell it) and it still operates as if it's brand new.

Can anyone tell me if the Dyson Animal brush is belt driven?

I have the Dyson canister model and it's brush is suction driven, which is a major problem for carpets. It doesn't work worth a darn. I have to stop vacuuming literally every two minutes to cut hair from the brush. What used to take 20 minutes now takes nearly an hour.

I relegated it to the basement. My son had it for a while and didn't like it either and he has hardwood floors.

I only noticed two different Animal models. After my girlfriend at work heard my story, she asked for a Dyson to replace her 20 yr. old Kirby. She's very, very happy with hers, also. She did get the DC-14 because they didn't have the DC-07 in stock (I've got the 07) and said that apparently the 07 is supposed to have better suction power. She couldn't tell me the differences but that's what she read off the Internet.
My brush is belt-driven. I can't tell for sure on the attachment for the stairs, but it looks like that's also belt-driven.

We have the same problem with the brush. The hair winds around it. We have the DC 7 animal. So we cut it off everytime we use it.

I did a little research. They now have a DC17. It has great reviews. I think I will try it.

Our shop vac was way too loud for the dogs and they freaked when I used it. Plus the shop vac always got clogged with hair. That hasn't happened at all with the Dyson. With the on-board attachments, I can whip out the crevice tool anytime. It's nice that I can keep up with keeping fur from under the stove and fridge. Plus, there's NO way I'd be able to store a shop vac - or my old upright vacuum for that matter, in our closet, they are/were way too stinky. The Dyson motivated me to get the closets cleaned out so I could keep it upstairs instead of in the basement like I had to with the old vacuum. Everything about the Dyson is just sooooo much better and easier. I still can't believe it.

Well, you may not want that one either. If you talk to vacuum repair or go out looking at reviews there's a multitude of problems Dysons are going in the shop for.

I don't think I want one at all. Dyson is good at one thing, marketing. I have a Riccar.

Its relatively easy to take our animal attachment apart to clean it. It is driven by a small cogged belt. Hair can bind-up some of the parts.

We love our Dyson - with 4 Newfy's it doesn't take long to fill. With my terrible allergies, there is little dust. However, Guy usually does the vacuuming and dusting so I can breathe. Mary Kay

Starting out year 4 with my Dyson 07 still going strong. I have never had to take apart the rotation brush either, just unwind the fur from around when it gets bad.
Sometimes a good vac is like a vacation!
