Dried Pads

Ozzy recently has had very dry pads on his feet. They are almost brittle-like. I think the vet said that we could put some type of oil on his food and it would help with the dry pads. Was I dreaming this or would that be a probable remedy? What type of oil would be best?

Also, what is the value of adding an occasional egg to your dog's food? Does it make his coat shinier?

Thanks for helping a novice!

We've always split a can of tuna between our girls in their dinner, and their coats are awesome.

Every day they each get a half can of tuna mixed in with their dry food.

When we have salmon they get the leftovers, which they very much prefer.

We are going to try the tuna too, I have also heard mackerel is good...don't know if this is true or not?

I want that super-shiny look.

Thanks for the tip GAD.

I have another question in regards to the tuna. Kaysie's coat was really shiny over summer and now that fall is here and she is getting the winter coat, the coat is dull and fuzzy looking. This is my first newf and she is just going on one, so I have no experience with this, but is this normally the way the winter coat looks. Will the tuna help shine it up some?
Thanks,
Heather

I don't notice my girls coat changing in the winter, but remember dry skin is common in the winter. We put on lotion to moisturize our skin, but dogs cannot. I suggest a humidifier to my customers. I have one. I also add oil to their diet. Olive or fish, but will try the tuna

In our house we have not had problems with dry pads. On a farily regular basis, I feed the boys a can of sardines. The can gets split between them. They also have had salmon, mackerel (The smell is pretty potent!), swordfish and tuna. I also add some human cod liver oil pills to their food. When I just poured oil over the food it did not go over too big, but the pills work fine.

I READ SOMEWHERE THAT U SHOULDNT GIVE ALOT OF OIL TO THEM BECAUSE IT CAN CAUSE PANCREAS PROBLEMS. SO MAYBE GET THE TUNA THATS CANNED IN WATER INSTEAD AND MAYBE ONCE AWEEK GIVE THEM TUNA IN OIL

I also noticed Tica's coat was not as shiny as was her summer coat. This is her first winter as an adult and also wondered if this was 'normal' I give her salmon skin and let her lick out the broiling pan but will now try the tuna. sounds like a good idea.
