Dogs in Cars

This morning on GMA they had a segment on pet safety in cars. I also noticed the largest animal they had was a golden. The segment made me think about mudji. I have seat belts and Mowgli and Angus used to use them all the time. They always got very excited when I pulled them out of the drawers. It was my only saving grace when I would do the drive with them from South Carolina back to Maine. There is no way I wanted to worry about one of them escaping on me at a rest area on the turnpike. I could unhitch them when I wanted to and they could not make that decision on their own.

Enter mudji.... You know, the kid with the HUGE personality! Well, he would wear the seat belt, but I don't think he really liked it. There is a handle on mine, and he would carry it in his mouth. BUT, he also chomped on it and almost bit the thing through. The handle was what latched into the seat belt and gave them some maneuverability as well as a little freedom (to move about the cabin, so to speak 8) ) So, although I really am adamant about seat belts, mudji never wore one.

And speaking of chomping.. On his last car ride, he carried in Angus' first leash. He loved to carry things into the car and then leave them there. No big deal.. I look back at him at one point and he has the leash in his mouth. Then.. I start telling him to drop it... and then I think why am I worrying about this... so the next think I know.. CHOMP... Yup, right in two...

And thinking about the life jacket and swimming. Mudji used to swim in our local river. Fairly strong current there, but no worries. Interesting thing I noticed.. He always made his turns turning into the current. ALWAYS....

I miss him... but I know you guys understand...

I know Hannah, I do understand. Amazing how your train of thought leads you to Mudji. I hope you are smiling more now when you think of him, and I hope it hurts less. :hugs: I would love to hear more Mudji stories.

Yesterday, John and I were taking the Newfs for their weekend off leash walk (4th of July here). As we rounded the corner to go down the hill to the woods, I started thinking about Nellie. That's when she would start dancing in her crate and whining because we were so close to the woods where she loved to walk. It was so quiet in the van, now.

Even when she was struggling with cancer, I would take her there all by herself and we would sit in the woods together and take it all in. I wouldn't let her go too far in, even though she wanted to, we still had to make the trip back.

As we unloaded the dogs from the van, we both noticed a huge bunny sitting at the entrance to the woods. All three boys were oblivious to it. John said "if Nellie were here, that bunny would be toast." I said "it's funny you should mention Nellie, I was just thinking about her." He said "I was too, I was thinking that even though it was so annoying to listen to her on the way down the hill, I really miss it."
