Doggie BO, dry dull coat, and flaky yucky skin

Yep, that about sums up my "beautiful" boy.

So, in the three weeks I've had Teddy, I've been feeding him good food, skin & coat supplements, and there's only been a slight improvement. Any tips?

P.S. What does a "healthy" puppy coat look like? Can it be shiny too? I mean, right now he looks like a big black Q-Tip.

Thanks,
Caroline

The shine definitely comes in later, in my very limited experience. They are kind of dull/fluffy until maybe 6 months and then the adult hair starts to come in along the back - and that's shiny.

Rory had her back end clipped about 4 months ago (long story) and the hair that has slowly grown back is still at the dull/fluffy stage. She really looks like she's wearing strange pants.

Relating to the dry/flaky skin...don't know how to help you there. But I think the lack of shine is normal at a young age.

I don't know about the flaky skin, but the dull fuzzy hair is puppy fur. The long silky hair will come in as an adult. If you look in the Photo section at "Rory's day on the boat", you will see my pups coat. She looks like a fuzzy brown sheep at this point.

Two things come to mind...

1. Are you bathing Teddy alot? Maybe the shampoo you're using is irritating him... however, I'd better defer this one to the groomers!!!

2. Have you checked with your vet? We had a rescue come in with what we thought was dandruff, but it was really a form of dermatitus (sp?). It might be worth checking into!

As far as a dull coat... I agree with what everyone has already said. At SCNC's gathering on Sunday, there were several puppies there. None of their coats were shiny... they're just big puff balls!!!

I agree with everything everyone has said. If he is itching and maybe smelling like dirty socks I would get a vet check right away could be a staff infection. Annie is right most puppies at the SCNC meeting Sunday were just fluff balls with no shine. Unless you notice any other symptoms I would not worry.

Oh a way to get the white flakes from you dog's coat is to use Static Guard. Spray it in the coat and brush or blow the flakes away!!

Hmm... thanks for your replies! Well, I know he won't get his "guard hairs" until later, but I was worried 'cause his puppy hair was really dry and brittle-feeling. It feels softer now, and has a little "gleam," but not like Bunny's.

I don't bathe him a *lot* -- too tricky! Mess and water and everything everywhere!

He smells like... like... something almost sour? Maybe his anal glands?

Thanks,
Caroline

Any time food is switched you must give it 6 months to work.
i agree what most have said.
check his ears often, theycan have a sour smell to them.
anal glands are not sour, but almost unbearable smelling.

Brady's neck area smells sour (like laundry that didn't dry well. I think it is because it is always wet! We are always chasing him with the towels, but it drys and than he drinks again and on and on. Right now we are treating him for a yeast infection in his ears, this also has a distinctive smell but not sour like his neck.
