Dog Shows

This is for ROM Newfie or any other breeder that shows, etc.

I did post this to Newf-L. And I'll ask the question again.

I know the Eukanuba Dog Show is very new. But, in the scheme of things how does it compare to Westminster, e.g.
For that matter what about the Crufts show in England?

I guess my question is: Is Westminster the "creme de la creme"?

TIA,

Sue

Sue,
The Eukanuba Classic is brand new (only a couple years old) and the intent is to make it the creme de la creme of dog shows. It is an invitation only dog show. If your dog isn't in the top 20 (I think that's the number they chose) then you don't get an invitation. As someone on Newf-L pointed out today, it is more of a showcase for breeders. And the cash prizes ain't too shabby! Westminster, in my opinion, is still the top quality show with the most prestige. Only champions are allowed to be shown- which is a change from years ago when unfinished dogs/bitches could enter and get points towards a championship. The top dogs in each breed are given preference in entering which is fairly new.
And for winning the breed at Westminster you get a rosette and a medallion. Same for Best of Opposite. Yes, the medallion was made by Tiffanys - the Westminster KC logo on the front and then BOB or BOS and the year on the back.
Westminster will always be the "granddaddy" of dog shows and I think the prestige will always be there.

Thanks, Linda.

I have often wondered about this "stuff"!

But, I am assuming, correct me if I am wrong, that if you want to increase exposure for your show dogs, you would utilize these shows, i. e. Crufts, Eukanuba, etc.?? No? Assuming you were one of the top 20.

Also, what are the tariffs that a breeder/handler/owner have to pay for these big time shows?

This to me is very interesting. I am just curious as I have never shown, and probably will never show.

TIA,

Sue
PS. Are there any other big time shows that are worth mentioning?

It is an honor just to be invited to the Eukanuba Classic and many breeders will make every effort to attend. Yes, it is good publicity for a kennel.
Westminster, while a prestigious show, is tough on the dogs. Very cramped and HOT! Thousands of people walking by and poking fingers thru crates. Because it is a "benched" show, dogs have to be on their assigned "bench" from something like 10 AM to 8 PM with time away from the assigned area only for potty breaks, pre-show grooming, and showing. Tough on the dog. We showed Sarah at Westminster and she won Best of Opposite one year. Would I do it again? Probably not. Very stressful for the dog and owner.
As for cost, most shows today are averaging $20-25 per entry. I'm sure Eukanuba was higher and Westminster is higher. Handler fees are more expensive at these shows too.
Crufts is probably the ultimate but few American dogs have been there in the past because of the quarantine laws in England.

Thanks, Linda

I could never quite "get a grip" on this stuff. I am merely a pet owner. Frankly, I think it is most interesting to know what exactly what you have to do.

Thanks again,

Sue

DDUUHH! Never think to ask my other question in the first place, but why is Crufts so big time? And why are so few American dogs invited (if there is invitation) or why can't they go? Without getting into politics, I am just wondering.

Believe it or not, I have had newfies for a long time. But, because I have only been a pet owner, I have never had to deal with any of this.

TIA,

Sue
