Dog and Cars

I've always had a hard time getting my dogs into the Cars, not that they don't want to go for a ride the problem is getting them into the car on there own. My last dog was a 157lb Bernie's Mt. dog, he would walk up to the car put his front paws on the back of the SUV turn his head and wait for me to lift his butt up. I tried to get him to run and jump..... but most of the times he would just stop just short rather than jumping.

Roo my 6 month old doesn't even try to get in, he just sits, walks around and shows no attempt on his part to jump in. I've tried using the side door and again nothing, I tried getting in first, sending my son in to encourage him, treats, all to no avail.

I'm getting to lazy (old) to continue lifting up the butts of my dogs and need some advice!!!

Ooooh, I likey!!

My Lab *never* jumped into the car, or over anything. She had sever dysplasia though.

Maggie has gone from a standing position ( with a stuffed hot dog in her mouth ) and jumped over 36" fencing, that was placed there to keep her out of the garden. I do think I'm going to check into Kristin's ramp, I don't like that she jumps out of the car.

I use a ramp and have since Indy had shoulder surgery. Didn't want them jumping and possibly injuring themselves. It did take a lot of time and patience to get them used to it. Lots of treats, lots of praise, and a lot of patience!

Have them eat their meals in the car for a while. If your car is high off the ground, you may want to invest in steps or a ramp.

For roughly $40 we made 2 (one for home & the other for work) of these (our dogs go in through the side doors, not the back)

We use a ramp too for Traveler. Gracie jumps in through the front passenger seat and then into the back (Jeep Grand Cherokee). She exits on the ramp though. She's getting too old to jump down and I don't want her to injure herself. One of the first things I taught Traveler and boy,I'm glad I did.

Dawn, what are those made of? We made our own ramp off the porch for Elvis' TPLO recovery but I think he'd do better with steps to get in the car. He won't ride in the trunk part and we can't put a ramp out the side doors.

So it seem from the response that either ramps or steps was the consensus. I don't mind purchasing a ramp, it comes down to space in the car and I was hoping to get some kind of trick that I had been missing. The funny thing is I've never seen anyone use either nor I have I ever seen anyone lifting there dogs butts up but me :) ... I always feel foolish doing it.

Thanks all...

We're currently going through a phase where Griffin DOES.NOT.WANT. to get into the car. He never had any issues before, but one day he just decided he doesn't want to get in. Doesn't even want to be lifted in the car. Treats didn't work. Cheese didn't work. Peanut butter didn't work. Finally we started using cooked pieces of turkey or chicken. Since he couldn't resist either of those it worked. I wonder if there's something Roo absolutely can't refuse. If you discover that, it's worth a try.

We used cookies to get Thor to get in the car. My husband would wait with Thor on one side while I went to the other and got in with a cookie while calling Thor. We did this a few times and it worked like a champ!

Uhh.. I'm a butt lifter! Obie is not now nor has he ever been a jumper. That's -good- because he doesn't try to jump on our bed. But, really?? I have to help you climb into the backseat of a bmw? Come on now! We had a ramp for Jose's old SUV.. with the current one, the back is low enough to do a pretty easy butt lift :)
