Does Your Newf Wag Its Tail?

I just realized that Sammy does not wag his tail - Delilah does though. Is this just one more result of Sammy's mental deficiencies?

Ya know, my Cassie doesn't wag her tail but for a reason. She was kept out on a chain for the 1st four years of her life. Wagging her tail didn't get her any attention so she barks when she's excited instead! (Not a good thing!) I've been working with her on this but it's hard with a dog that was under these circumstances for the first years of her life.

My other 2 wag their whole butts along with tail!

HB does wag her tail..but a rather genial-gentle sway. The speed..depends upon her emotional commitment..of the moment. The only time it 'rings false'..is when she is standing tippy-paws, stretched UP..into a tree..after a squirrel. Yeah..like any sq., worth its salt..is gonna believe HBs..'only want'ta PLAY with'ya!'..pose! NOT..bloody likely! ;) ina n HB

Ebony's tail starts wagging just if you look at her! And then when you start talking to her it really goes...and if it's someone "new" her whole body wiggles...her back end and front end look like they are going to unhinge!

Tails go all the time here, except when I say "Watch your tail". Then they drop - hopefully. Could be meds, could be balance. I don't think Echo wags as much now that she's crippled up in the back and always trying to keep her balance with most of her weight on her left leg. She wags mostly when she's laying down - now that you mention it.

Watch you tail....that's a great command I need to teach! There have been several times where everything on the coffee table was swept off!

Uwe wags his tail when you look at him. It's not a fast wag, but more like an acknowledgement that he sees you checking him out.
However, if he's seeing you for the first time that day, you get a full body wag!

I always thought Kala never really wagged her tail much. If she's laying down, she sometimes will wag just the tip of her tail. When we come home from someplace, we'll get a full-body wag but that's probably because she always gets a treat. It just doesn't seem like she uses her tail to communicate or express her emotions. My Pyr, on the other hand, we call "helicopter tail" because he'll practically wind himself up with his wags...

I agree the non-wagging is probably an equilibrium/balance issue. Gabe is not a real fierce tail wagger...More like a lazy flip. Hannah wags her whole butt. Sophie is a reserved wagger like her brother. She shows her happiness all in her face.

Not only do they wag their tails, but their whole bodies with it. And Baxter squeaks along with it.

Addie...sometimes. Usually it's a whole body wiggle.

Molly...not much, she prefers to dance with you to say her hello and show her pleasure. Her whole body is hopping and squirming.

Mira...not often either...she kind of prances all over, but there's a slight wag when she's happy.

The Goldens never stop. I've never seen so many wagging tails and wiggling butts!

Bruno does wag a little bit when he's seen something he likes or someone.

But when he's really happy is a whole bum wiggle - in fact im sure its going to fall off one day!

Rebel my GSDxLab again wags all the time but again whole bum goes in a proper wag.

Both Rory and Sage are real tag waggers! Rory can also clear the coffee table of everything on it! I am trying to train her to dust the rest of the furniture.
Interestingly enough, newfs use their tails as rudders when they swim.
