Could someone recommend a tasty low calorie or light food? Baloo eats innova chicken and turkey, loves it I have reduced his food to 2 3/4 cups a day(he used to eat five 1/2) ---he is losing but it is only about a pound or two a month. he is being treated for having some hip issues, which is one reason we want to have him lose weight. We are rechecking his thyroid as it has been a year and the vet said it would be prudent to do so in a year. Also we have been doing two shorter exercise periods rather than long. The river is finally thawed and I think that will help him strengthen up his rear end and lose some too but thought I would try every angle to help him lose:)

I recommend Canidae Platnium. It's lower in calories than regular Canidae, extremely nutritious, and tasty. You could also try adding partially thawed frozen green beans to make him feel like he isn't getting such a tiny amount of food.

Poor Baloo - I know the struggle with trying to get them to lose weight, Teddy is in the same position. He was only getting 2 1/2 cups of Orijen fish food (with a tin of sardines mixed in), and was VERY slowly losing weight. I've tried the green beans...he won't touch em. I put him back on raw the last few days...he is much happier. Have you tried raw food? Teddy was much leaner when he was on the raw.

I'm no expert, but my concern with "light" foods is that they have filler in them to make the dog feel full, and are not necessarily the healthiest choice.

I think for weight loss the key is to feed a very high quality food, with a lean protein source and limited carbs. Grain free would be the way I would go - no rice, corn, wheat, etc. since it is these carbs that the dog can't metabolize efficiently and which ultimately are stored as fat, leading to weight gain.

Personally I feed Orijen, but there are a few other grain free brands too, like Wellness Core. It is important to adjust serving size with these foods though. Some grain free foods have higher calories than regular kibble, so you need to feed a lot less. But since the dog metabolizes the food more efficiently and uses all of the food, the result is a healthier dog , including reduction of fat and increase in lean muscle mass.

Also, cut out snacks and increase exercise. He needs to burn calories. Particularly for a dog with hip issues, exercise can make a huge difference in minimizing symptoms and slowing down deterioration. Swimming of course is great, but steady work on land is good too. Marin has severe bilateral hd and hikes several miles a day. Slowly work Baloo up to an exercise regimen that helps him drop the pounds. Building up the muscles in his hip area is critical if you are seeing problem in his back end.

Hope that helps. :)

As long as he is losing I think whatever you are doing is working! I agree with Sandra about "lite" kibbles...they aren't too great.
It is a very slow process.
Hang in there!!

Stay with Innova Senior or try the Orijen Senior. Senior foods are generally not the healthiest choice to keep a dog looking good. There are very few senior foods that I would use.

Thanks guys, I feel so frustrated, Baloo definitely is not the greenbean boy either;) I have to say since we switched from the EVO no grain his coat seems much dryer but that food had so many calories per cup, that he was getting even less than he is now:( I am still going to get his thyroid rechecked and send off to Dr. Dodds rather then our local lab. Thanks everyone!:)
