I was wondering if anyone feeds their newfs Wellness Core lowfat version kibble? I have fed this to Baloo for about 4 yrs with no problems(except that it is so expensive at almost $70.00 for a 26 lbs! ) Baloo is allergic to corn and sensitive to wheat. What I'm wondering is if over time low fat foods can cause their coats to become dry? Baloo's is particularly dry on his feathers, tail and pantaloons. I use Ice on Ice leave in detangler and finishing spray and Paul Mitchell Oatmeal Shampoo and conditioner for dogs. Baloo is almost 8. Any thoughts would be appreciated:D

Do you give him Wild Salmon Oil?

Cole had a dry nose (to the point it was cracking last year) when we ran out for about a month. Within a week or so after receiving our order...his nose was back to normal!

I will NEVER run out of Salmon Oil again!! All of ours get it, every day. We give the liquid form and just put on one of their meals. They love it. And their skin is good...coats gleam!

Wild salmon oil, just as other fish oils, specifically contains the important omega 3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Supplementation with omega 3 fatty acids contained in wild salmon oil and other fish oils therefore effectively nourishes a dog's skin and coat, helps support a healthy heart, encourages good vision, joint health and ultimately proper immune function. Basically, dogs affected by any type of inflammatory condition appear to benefit from the supplementation of fish oil, explains Dr. Jeannie Thomason, a Doctor of Veterinary Naturopathy who writes for Whole Dog News.

And yes, a lack of fat in the diet can lead to dry skin and dull coat.

I've been feeding this food to Sydney, my Aussie mix for awhile now with no problems. She's hypothyroid also and is on meds for it. She does get two fish oil capsules with each meal along with vitamin c, Cosamin DS (human version), CO-Q10 and cranberry. Her coat is beautiful and we've been able to manage her weight.

It wouldn't hurt to get Baloo's thyroid checked as mentioned and fish oil does wonders.

Salmon oil

Donna, I don't currently give Baloo Salmon oil--I am going to have to get some, we used to give him the capsules(regular fish oil) in a treat but they made him eurpee. Sounds like the Salmon oil is the way to go. He is a weird newf in that he doesn't like fish! I don't think it would bother him though on his food:D I'm going to order some today:D Thanks everybody!!
