hi all, I am very new to this site. I have a 12 week old female Newfie 'Gracie" She is adorable..and full of life, and energy! Yikes! A couple of things.
#1 She Pees in her crate at night. I am now trying to walk her at midnight and then 5 am, hopefully, that will STOP, as she rolls in it, and stinks the next day. I bathe her everyday becasue of this. Breeder says no good...stop, because of her coat, but I think that pee on the coat is worse. Crate not too big. Also, a long, long walk yesterday, after her meal...comes right in and poops in her usual spot..on the rug! HELP!!
#2 No matter how many baths, she kind of has this odor. Th vet said it was her ears, and cleaned them out. Any recommendations on ear cleaners. The vet was maybe 16 alright, I'm exaggeratng, but very young. Will see a new one next time.
#3 She is very good with me, but quite ill-mannered with the kids. She bites my 4 yar old's clothes, and sometimes skin too! Jumps up on the table to eat their food etc. I firmly tell her no, and push her down, but she is so hyper, that she just does it again. I hate to sond like I am complaining. She is so cute, and I love he
r so much, I just don't want a 150 lb Newfie doing this stuff!
Thanks!
Tricia and Gracie...the Goofy Newfie!

The hyper pup is pretty normal. It was just a year ago for me that I was going through that stage. I have to admit, Kuma did the same thing in the crate and I eventually caved in and threw the thing in the garage. We set up a baby gate and kept her in the kitchen for the first few months. So I'm not the crate training expert.
I think the key with a young pup is to monitor their characteristics - eventually, you'll be able to recognize when she has to go. Also monitor the water intake - that'll be another clue. Kuma seemed to go every 2 hours until about 15-16 weeks.
Another good idea is to start puppy kindergarten as soon as you can. Socializing is best started young though you usually have to wait for all shots to be done (4 months). One of the key thinkgs I learned in pup school is Remove, Redirect and Praise. Always have no less then 3 toys available - 1 squickie, 1 that rolls, and one good chewie rubber thing like a kong. When she's bitting on the leg, remove her, give her a toy and praise her.
Hope that helps....she's going to be great fun!!!

Hi and welcome.
You should really be looking into puppy kindergarden or some type of obedience schooling. Untill then, I recommend reading alot about newf puppy care or just puppycare. There are tons of great sites on the web about crate training etc. A 12 week old puppy can't really be expected to hold urine all nite. At least every 4 hours and then go up an hour with every month in age. I know it's hard to crawl out of a warm bed in the middle of the nite but thats what it takes at first. alot of hard work and a watchful eye. Being consistent with your training is a great idea too so good luck and lets see some pictures ok.

Hi, Tricia! Welcome to the forum!

As far as your pup goes, in the beginning pups are a little smelly since they really do not clean themselves adequately at that age. I used antibacterial wipes daily to keep my pup clean in the beginning instead of baths all the time. I agree with Brenda, that a pup that age cannot really hold it all night and may need to be walked at 2:30 if need be. Make sure the crate is small enough (just enough room for her to turn around). You can divide it up with wooden slats of wood or a large box. As far as her training goes, be consistent and get her into puppy kindergarten when she is old enough.

Hi Tricia, like the saying goes, an obedient newf is a happy newf!!! Hang in there you can do it... and don't worry about the kids clothes. they are only going to grow out of them anyway. :D

This probably sounds dreadfully old-fashioned, but since it's 7 below or worse at night, and you've got her behind a baby gate, what about using those puppy "piddle pads" at night? We got Angus last spring, at 12 weeks too. I took him out around 11:30 or midnight. Got up at 5:30 or 6 with him, but he used the paper during the night. It was in his "space" with him, but at a distance from his bed and he got the idea.As he got older, he used it less and I would leave one near the back door also and he easily made the transition to the back yard, say within a month. There were accidents, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. Just a suggestion. Good luck. Anne

We used the piddle pads too since we got Bubba during the winter. We put a couple in front of the door, and we actually slept on the pull out couch in the livingroom where the door was for the first month or so. . Took him out a few times through the night, so he got the idea the the pads were in front of the exit to go pee. And didn't have many accidents off the pads. I think we were lucky.

I guess I've been very lucky with Hunter because he has gone all night without having an accident in the crate except for the first night he was here. We got him at 10 1/2 weeks. I feed him his last meal at 6 pm and pick up the water at about 8:30. I let him out somewhere between 10:30 and 11 for his last pee and he sleeps until 7 am. He is now 16 weeks and basically housebroken. Of course, he doesn't have the total run of the house yet. That would be asking for trouble!!!

Our girl Kimber is 5 now, but when she was little, I couldn't keep a blanket or pad in her crate. If there was something there to soak it up, she would go in the crate. With a bare floor, she held it fine (not for more than a few hours though). We tried the puppy pads. Kimber had a great time shredding them :D

When we couldn't be there to let her out at a decent amount of time, we put her in our laundry room with everything puppy-proofed. I'd put the crate in with the door open and cover the floor with newspaper. I also put 2 baby gates across the door (she climbed over one). I also had to watch where I put the crate because she could get on top of it and I once came home to find her on top of the dryer looking out the window :D

If the odor keeps coming back and Gracie's ears look goopy inside, you may need to clean them often. At one point Kimber was having an allergy problem and I had to clean hers twice a day. I'd ask your vet what a good ear cleaner to use often would be. Some of them are too harsh to use all the time.

I think puppy kindergarten or some other training would be great. Training will help a lot. Our trainer was a huge help with Kimber.

It sounds like Gracie is treating kids like they are puppies. A lot of puppies do this to kids. Maybe Gracie needs a few minutes of quiet in her crate with a chew toy when she gets too wound up. Puppies can get overstimulated just like kids.

Gracie sounds like she'll be a great newf when you're all done. It's a lot of work raising a newfie and it sounds like you're doing a great job.

Gracie's treating you well already. She just needs to learn to extend it to the other puppies (kids
) Also, the more new experiences you can expose Gracie to at this age, the better.

Ella was like that with my two girls to start with ( 3 and 5 ) but we were firm with her , she now curbs it around them.
You mustnt let her get away with it , best thing ive found is simply to praise good behaviour and ignore bad.Ella cannot bare to be ignored.
Good luck and welcome x x
