Can anyone tell me more about this disease, testing for it, and complications that might occure on sick dogs?

Also, can anyone explain the genetic inheritage, how does it work through the generations?

When is the best time to do the testing (what age of the dog), is it mandatory in the US?

Thanks ahead, and sorry for poor english...

The testing for this disease is a DNA test done with a cheek swab sent to a lab for testing. Two parents with the disease will pass it along to the pups and two carriers can pass it along. Dogs with this disease will develop kidney or bladder stones. It is a serious condition that could result in death if not treated. It is not mandatory in the US, but more and more breeders are doing the testing now.

Here is a link that explains more in depth:

Here are a few sites.

My understanding on this is you can be one of three things. Clear, carrier, or affected. If you are clear, you cannot pass down the gene. If you are a carrier, you can pass the gene, but if bred with a clear, the worst you can get is an affectd dog. If you are affected, you CAN pass on that gene or have carriers. A simple blood test can determine all of this.

I'm sure someone will pipe in with more info than I have. But, that's the basics.

IF two carriers are bred together they can produce effected. If a carrier and a clear are bred they can produce carriers and clears but no effected.
CLEAR TO AFFECTED PRODUCES Affected!

There ya go kelly! ;)
Susan ivory gave this to me, as there seemed to be some confusion on the clear to affected results.

Your English is fine. Its our Hrvatski jezik that needs a little work....

Beware of the terminology "cystinuria tested" when reviewing pedigrees.

That phrase needs to be accompanied by the following:

Was the test performed using a DNA method, (Yes or No)? (as opposed to a physical exam)

Is the animal affected, carrier or clear?

Don't assume.
