Cutting hair and nails

Shadoes hair has gotten too long on top and now, I'm embarrassed to say has a part down the middle. How do I cut it shorter without it look blunt. I trim his ears but they always look blunt...even though I'm using the thinning shears. I'm using a decent pair a shears also.

Is peeling normal for Newf nails? I cut his nails but they always seem to peel .
How do you get close enough without cutting the quick?
If I lift his paw and cut I can see a small space ????
Also every now and then I will find an entire casing of his nail....but I check his paws and can't see which nail it came from...no limping, no pain when I touch.
Hope I'm explaining this clearly.

Maggie sometimes has her nails "peel", too. It never seems to bother her. Maybe Jeannie, or one of the other groomers on NN will chime in.

Wish I could help...but I have the same problems. I'm also having issues with splitting of the nails. And good thing I don't mind the crazy fluff...cuz I can't cut Bear's hair to save my life. Good thing he has a wonderful Aunt that can cut it beautifully...and she does it whenever she see's him...cuz she can't stand his crazy fluff HaHa.

I always cut nails with the red handled Miller's Forge cutters then use a dremel. I prefer M F's because they are cheap, stay sharp for quite a while, and can be tossed when dull. I despise the guillotine type. They tend to crush the nails rather than a clean cut.

If the hair on the top and back of the head is parting, hold it out with a comb and then use the thinners on it trying to get all the head hair the same length. I use thinners with teeth numbering in the 40s.
