I thought it was Animal Planet that featured Crufts. But, I haven't seen one mention of Crufts on Animal Planet, nor has there been anything in the TV guide (from the newspaper). Has anyone here in the states seen Crufts on TV and if so, when?

TIA,

Sue

In years past the Crufts coverage on Animal Planet has been telivised a week or two after the actual event. It is not live like the USA coverage of Westminster. I would expect to see it begin to be advertised in the next week.

Everyone that we meet on our walk says that the Newf should have won - did you see that the judge just ignored the newf and went to the next dog. I wonder if they worry that it will make people go out and get one - just because they were BIS

Whether a dog will increase in popularity or not is not what concerns a judge in a dog show. I have not seen the show so have no idea what the judge found in the Newf- but he must have preferred others to the Newf. What we see on TV (and even pictures) is not necessarily what the judge is "seeing." There is no substitute for hands on for each dog.
As for the increase in popularity, yes, the Newf is becoming more popular. For years and years, the Newf was ranked as #49 or 50 by AKC (based on numbers registered, litters produced?). This past year saw the Newf jump to #42 (or there abouts). I've had a HUGE increase in the number of requests I get for our regional club's breeders listing. It used to be about 3 per week but is now up to 10-16 per week.

That's even true when we are sitting rinigside. What we see and what the judge sees are not always the same thing. It is important to be able to put your hands on the dog too.
ALthoug I must admit, sometimes, I think the judge hasn't looked or touched the bdog at all.
