Calcium Supplements?

Do any of you give calcium to your newfies? I'm on them and have been for years, and I can't help but think they might help Troy too. I've never seen this one discussed though, so feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks!

They get plenty of calcium from the bones (raw chicken is a staple in their diet)...and also from egg shells. Every other morning, they get an egg...shell and all...in their breakfast. I feed Wendy Volhard's Natural Diet to all of our dogs.

Others may weigh in on this one. With all the new studies going on with calcium and phosphorus requirements and such. I would not be too quick to give any, provided the food you are feeding has the proper suggested amounts.

I think I remember reading somewhere, too much calcium can cause problems while growing. In an adult dog, I don't know if the same holds true.

I was told by my breeder to never ever give calcium suppliments and I had to sign a contract to say that I would not.

She said it causes bone and growth problems.

Thanks for all your responses! I feed him Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice for Fat Puppies (actually it's the "Lite" formula). ;) Gonna go check out Scott's sites now.

Based on all your responses and after reading Scott's sites and the ingredients of Nutro Lite (which contains calcium), Troy won't be getting any other supplements. Thanks again!!!
