broken toe

I broke my pinky toe on my right foot back in mid-Oct. Although Griffin didn't directly do it, it was his fault! But I digress...

I went to the ER, and of course the "we can't really do much about it" speech happened. I taped my toe, wore a special shoe, iced, elevated it (probably not as much as I should have). However, 4 months later my toe is still slightly swollen and occasionally hurts, especially if the dog steps on it, which is quite often (what is it with dogs loving standing on human feet?!). Has anyone else broken a toe and it took this long for it to go back to normal?

If this isn't normal I'll be scheduling an appointment with my doctor and orthopedic doctor.

I'm no expert, but I'd say 4 months is plenty of time for a bone to heal. I'd call a Podiatrist and have him look at that wonky toe! (my little guy has a metatarsial deformity and we go to a Podiatrist for it...I would *think* that would be who you should see for it, but again, I'm no expert!)

I absolutely know how you feel...and yes it takes FOREVER for a broken little toe to heal! I broke mine and it was painful for at least 4 to 5 months. I couldn't wear anything other than a flip flop...thank GOD I lived in Florida at the time...LOL...it is incredibly painful for such a little thing...never want to experience that again! I suggest you massage it everyday and although it hurts like crazy it does seem to help. Other than taping to your other toes nothing they can do...sorry I know it HURTS!

Awwww. I am cringing just hearing about this.

I once sent my daughter to school 3 days on a broken foot #MomOfTheYearNOT. :banghead:

I broke the exact toe probably four years ago. So far only bone I have ever broken. I happened to break it on the way out the door to see my mom in the hospital. I stubbed it on a coffee table cussed then got in the car drove 5 mins to the hospital. Didn't think anything of it. Just assumed I was being clumsy and would walk it off. By the time I got there and got off the elevator they had to get me a wheel chair I couldn't walk it hurt like hell. They wheeled me down took an X ray and said it was definitely broken. Plus side was I think they assumed I broke it in the hospital and I never saw a bill. I thought it was odd I didn't have to wait in triage or fill out a thousand papers. LOL It only took mine around 3 weeks to heal. Bruising was nasty looking but never had any problems since then. I would go to the doctor. It couldn't hurt to have it looked at. It sounds like it didn't heal properly. I feel your pain :(

You never realize how important that little toe is until it's broken!

Reminds me of the time my mom took my brother and me ice skating when we were young. My brother broke his foot and my mom kept telling him he was fine and to get up. Needless to say she felt pretty awful when she found out he wasn't just playing it up.

I broke my pinky toe a few years ago, in a Z pattern. I saw 3 Dr.'s and was handed the most expensive roll of gauze, tape and crutches ever. :tequila:

Did they x-ray it? You could've broken something besides your toe. It shouldn't still be swelling, unless something is wrong. I tore cartlidge in my ankle, thanks to Maggie's digging skills, almost two years ago, and it was a swollen mess until my surgery 7 months later. * 1 year ago yesterday!!* :music: Swelling isn't good and is a sign of a deeper injury. Start with a podiatrist, and good luck.

The bone should be healed in about 6-8 weeks. However it is very possible that you move it too much for it to heal properly; especially if you keep getting stepped on. Basketball players have literally played half a season on a broken toe and it never heals until the off season.
