Brand of Dog Food Question.....

My husband and I are hoping to add a Newfie to our family. We have a question about which brand of dogfood is best. I have heard so many names of foods that I have never seen before. We were wondering if Iams dog food is a good choice or if it is one to stay away from.

A lot of breeders will require you feed what they suggest. i would wait and see whom you are buying from and ask them their opinion.
i require my puppy buyers to feed Wysong the Synorgen formula.

Many breeders say not to feed Iams or Eukanuba. Too much protien. Puppies should not be fed puppy food because the protein makes them grow too fast. Talk to your breeder and try to keep the puppy on whatever they are feeding.

I agree on the Eukanuba large breed puppy food, too much protein. Kodi developed "pano" at 5 months old from the high protein content. I would follow the breeders instructions.

What do you think of the Wellness? We started Brady on Flint River Ranch, but he had terrible diarrhea. Our vet suggested the Eukanuba again he didn't do well. So we are now trying the Wellness, when comparing the brands, it seems the Wellness is good. Even gradually changing Brady's food didn't work. Should we not be using the puppy formula because of the protein? I get so nervous about screwing him up somehow. Our kids are in their 20's they made it ok.

Most high quality dog foods like Flint River and Wellness may cause diarrhea until their bodies adjust to the richness of the foods. Although with Sara, my oldest she did not adjust that is why I chose Bill Jac select (a dry food) good quality and no diarrhea

Bil-Jac Select here also. No stool problems at all even when changing over.

We also supplement his evening meal with fresh fruits and veggies.

Hmmmmmmm, I wonder if that is why Jake is having loose stools some of the time and not others? I am feeding him the Nutra dog food and I think it is a premium, is the Bil-Jac low in fat and protein? This was the main thing the breeders wanted me to make sure of when getting food for Jake.
Thanks

I am by no means an expert but here's a few thoughts. Is Nutro a lamb based formula? I know my friend's pup just does not do well on a lamb based diet.

I personally find Bil-Jac Select to be a hair on the high side in protein and fat but so far our boy really does thrive on it. We keep him pretty active and are extremely cautious about monitoring his weight. We feed him less than the manufacturer's suggested serving size for his weight but as I stated earlier, we do supplement with carrots, green beens, brocolli etc as fillers in his diet.

It's extremely tough sometimes to decide what to feed your best friend. So much of the literature and websites out there tend to contradict one another so much it's just a cluttered mess. Basically, I believe you find a food that has the least amount of "crap" added into it, uses human grade ingredients, and then play around with a few different types until you find what works best for your pup.

Sorry for a lack of specifics, maybe one of the breeders or someone with more newf experience can help you more.

One other thing for you to bear in mind is that our boy P.J. is a rescued Newf/Lab mix, so maybe someone with a purebred can offer better diet advice.

I've rambled too long already,

Good Luck in the quest!!!!

Does anyone have any suggestions for premium foods that might be available in Canada. I've looked into some of the ones suggested here and short of ordering from the States and paying well with duty, customs, exchange and shipping probably double the price at least, I'd like to find a Canadian version.

Also any opinions on Science Diet products? I fed Science Diet (Hairball Control Light formula)to my cat and she positively thrives on it.

Thanks in advance for any info povided.

A couple of you mentioned the Bil-Jac Select food. Is that a puppy food or an adult food? Does anyone know if Iams Large Breed Puppy is any better than Eukanuba puppy food?

I am no expert on feeds but I do know that my breeder said not to use Iams, that since Coke bought them their feed is not as good as it used to be can't remember why.

I just came back from the pet store where I checked out foods. The Iams large breed puppy had the least amount of protein, followed by Bil-Jac Select, and the Eukanuba large breed puppy had the most protein.

Lynn, the Eukanuba large breed puppy is what I had Kodi on as a puppy and he developed the "pano". This kibble had too much protein. He was taken off of it around 5 months of age. I tried the Innova brand but he had diarrhea from it. He's on Eukanuba large breed adult, which has been problem free, but I'm thinking of slowly switching over to Bil-Jac.

I would go with the Bill Jac select. I have all my girls on it and they range in age from 4 years to 11 years. I keep them pretty active with daily walks and things. I also feed less than they suggest. I feed 1 to 1 1/2 cups per feeding with some canned food or tuna. I also sometimes add carrots or green beans.

I have tired so many brands, Nutro, Iams, Eukanuba, Innova, Science Diet and so on.... and I have the best luck with Bil Jac. Now my girls do not like the frozen which is fine with me because of the protien. I thought of putting Sara (age 11 next week) on the Senior formula, but since she is doing so well on the select I am not changing.
