Boy or Girl? Do you have a preference?

Hi All,
I didn't know where to post, genetics/breeding or general discussion, so here I go. Since many of you have multiples of newfies do you have a preference on the sex? Are they different once they are neutered or spayed? I have had two females and a male, mixes that is, but wondered if it would be different for Newfies?

Another question, none of my dogs have ever slept on a bed, they just never wanted to or were too hot.... what about Newfies?

Thanks everyone!

lol :fce32f95:, I meant a dog bed or those special Kuranda beds. All dogs want to get up on the human's bed isn't that right?

Mine have never slept on a bed, other than mine. They all prefer to lay about in various cool spots on the floor. They all ate the various beds they had as puppies. I stopped buying them long ago.
Ironically, the only one who will snuggle in bed with me is Hannah...and she has triple the hair of the other two and is the most hot natured!

I read that all other things being equal boys were more susceptible to bloat. Don´t have any experience myself though. Anybody else hear this?

Love it...Erika...gave me a giggle! I had girl Labs and mastiffs before now have 2 male newfs. My boys are loves but the girls look a bit easier to train. Both boys come up on our bed for snuggles but leave for cooler spots after 10 minutes...neither like a bed.
Umm....hummm...Erika...I guess that's a boy on the coffee table:devil2:

My 3 boys love their beds in the winter..but prefer the tile during the warmer months.
As far as the sex goes..i think both are similar. Males are usually alot bigger...so you have to decide if you want that or not. I think both sexes are loving..just depends on individual personalities...some are more aloof...male or female.

I personally prefer male dogs but with Newfies I would have to say it's a toss up. I LOVE my male...he is very sweet and loving...but I've met many females that are just as sweet! I really think that's just the temperament of Newfs in general. :) Remember males are definitely larger so that should be a deciding factor. My male is 143 lbs and he's just over two years of age. Vet says he'll continue to grow until he's three. As for the dog beds, nope. Waste of money with my Newf. I've spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on beds (trying to find just the right one that he'd take a liking to) and he won't use any of them. He won't even sleep on carpet. He loves our cool tile and won't sleep anywhere else. I would save your money!

I have two boys, and they are very different personality: Byron can take it or leave, and usually doesnt last more than a few minutes of cuddling, Abe would love and cuddle all day if he could. I think its just personality not sex. Also, while males are generally bigger, my boys are small (under 110 lbs each), and I dont see them getting much bigger - you have to look at the parents and the lines in general, although Byron (I had him since puppyhood) is a lot smaller than his parents and most of his siblings (he is not the runt). So in the end, I am no help. :)

As far as bed, Abe is really good about not going on furniture ( cant take credit for that). Byron will go up on our bed until the lights are out, then he gets off, he never sleeps up there. They love their dog bed - its best $18 dollars I ever spent (thank you Costco!!), they drag their bones and treats there, and lay on it all the time. So again, depends on the dog. So we are all no help - haha. Guess you will have to go with your gut, and consider other dogs you have if any, and what sex they get along better with. :)

I love my two boys. I like the girls I've met, but there's something about the boys...

and mine like their dog beds as a place of repose for a good long contemplative chew on one of their toys, and for part of the night - they will sleep on the floor, get up, go sleep on the dog bed, get up, go sleep on the floor...I think when they get hot they go for the floor and when they get stiff or cold they go for the dog bed. It doesn't even wake me up anymore when they swap out.

I love all of these responses! Thank you all. If nothing else, it shows how much love you all have for wo/man's best friend! The stories are great and the photos are precious, please keep them coming! I really enjoy your input.

Erika - I'm in agreement with Linda, looks like there is a peeping tom on that table!

As to the sex. I've always had boys until recently. My one girl was a challenge when we first picked her up, but there were a lot of issues. (in season for one). Also she'd never been away from home, her pack, or her owner. We got her at 4 yrs old and she and my altered male (also 4)had a rocky start mostly due to her being in heat, but they are now the best of buds. Since then she has been spayed and it's made a lot of difference. She's so much calmer now. She plays mama to the 6 mo old pup and he literally walks all over her. The boys and girls play the same... I see no difference really, except that she seems more protective.
Mine like to have a bed as a place of their own, but they don't stay on them long. They move around the house to one spot after another. I thought coolness too, then I saw Sam laying with his head on the floor vent (with the heat blasting at him). Go figure.
The puppy has one in his crates, but he bunches them up and uses them as a pillow and the rest is on the cooler crate florr

My husband likes his "harem" - me (at least I think I'm first in the pecking order, but maybe not), Caera, Misha and Miss Kitty. He has a thing for all things female, but we plan on breeding our younger girl, Misha, this spring and hopefully bring home a Landseer in the fall. At this point, I'm open to male or female, but the man ... (and, of course, MOM nature) will decide.
