Before and After

Maggie had her first trip to the groomers today. I asked for them to tunnel the belly, trim her feathers and even out the guard hairs. This translated into...pull out the clippers! At least its not to the skin. Thinking positive here, heard enough negative comments for one day.

Before...

And after...

Awww...it will grow back! And much more quickly than you might think. She's still beautiful.

Agree with Nessa, she's a beauty anyway. That's what I fear so I've been messing with grooming myself, Zeke still only has half of him cut and a bald spot in his hind quarters with thanks to his Pop-Pop (who tried to help while I napped on the job)

She still looks good, and I'm sure she's comfy!! Glad they didn't clip down to the skin!! Next time tell the groomer "don't even THINK about using clippers on her" :) That usually does it. haha

I can imagine the shock when you saw her at the groomers...gosh. Well, the good news is that it will grow back and you are definitely more upset by it than she is! I'm sorry this happened though. :hugs: And yes, she is still a cutie patootie!

I printed this and gave it to my groomer before she gave Mila a show trim (for her comfort during the summer; she's not shown or anything), even though I knew that my groomer had done show trims for Newfs in the past. I just told her "For my peace of mind, just take this." Maybe you could try this the next time you're brave enough to get her worked on again...

Sometimes I think you have to spray paint the words "NO CLIPPERS" on the poor dog's side. I guess I can say that I've seen worse, but I know how upsetting it can be, especially when you think you've communicated your desires. She is still a beautiful girl, though.

I bet she's really soft!!! That happened to Elvis once, it grew back exactly the same as it was before in no time - floof included!

Maggie is a pretty Newf. If only she could talk and tell you if she loves the new coolness.

We just got back with Orka from his groomer's. I thank the Lord frequently for our groomer, who does exactly what we ask and is very knowledgeable about so many things, and Orka loves her. She was recommended by a helpful Newf breeder / show / draft / water / judge here, and is an expert handler. Not only does Orka get the full treatment but she trains him too. And then I brush rake and comb him every day. The groomer is awesome in that she insists her clients keep their dogs in tip top shape and gives instructions to the owner after each grooming! So Orka and I get a report card each time and it has really helped me learn to take care of him.

Does your area have a Newf Club where you can ask for groomer recommendations?

She's still beautiful! Bless your heart for having to hear negative things.. It'll grow back.
She will have a gorgeous coat again soon.

I think we are coming to terms that you cant put fur back on. Been thinking of all the good points...she looks like a puppy again (big ol honkin puppy), she is very soft, will be easier to check for ticks, dry faster, brush easier, she is cooler and have A LOT of time to find a new groomer!!!
Thank you all so much for the comforting words. It really made me feel better.
Hugs and tail wags to you all! :grouphug:

She is still a gorgeous girl...And yes, unfortunately, we here on NN have seen MUCH worse.
She is short but it doesn't look like a hack job...I think she will grow out just fine in no time. Smooches, pretty Maggie

Oh no - this reminds me of the time a groomer shaved my parent's Irish Setter - how do you not know? This is your job! I will say this - Maggie pulls off the new look very well, what a cutie!

It's a cute dooo for summer and it will grow out. Just think about how much easier it will be able to take care of when dealing with water this summer! :)

Jeannie used to have a post on how to trim a Newf. I prinited a copy and took it along to the groomer. You may want to see if you can find the post to take to your next groomer. (edited to add.. I see someone else posted another one above)

I will take mine to the groomers for bathing and brushing (mostly to have them handled by another person or if I have been really busy), but do all of my own trimming to try to avoid those issues. Then if I mess up the cut, I have no one to blame but myself (and boy did I have some bad cuts when I first started) LOL

Clippers aren't a bad thing when used properly on a newf. I have been trying to do her ears with scissors for years and cannot get them even for the life of me. So, I use clippers to do the bottom of Sadie's paws and put the spacers (usually the 3/4 ") to even out the upper part of her ears (down to towards the tip. I don't go the whole way up). I still trimn the edges with scissors. The clippers help me blend it much better.

I also trim just the scraggly guard hairs that stick out with them. I never go down into the main part of her coat. It saves a lot of time and helps a lot. If I trim too long with scissors, my fibro flares. Her feathers and such are still all done with scissors.

Most folks including several on here have seen Sadie and think she looks good. They probably never knew that I use them. When I use straight scissors and thinning sheers only, she was extremely choppy looking.

Just think how much quicker you can get your gorgeous girl dry when she's able to get in the 'big girl pool"! ;)
