Barking

Hi everybody, hope this is in the correct section. Its just a small problem at the moment but dont want it getting any worse. Noah has been premoted to the living room at night as he has stopped trying to destroy everything in sight but since being premoted he has started barking in the middle of the night at the slightest noise!!! Its just as quiet in the living room as the kitchen so there are no noise distractions. My milkman comes at around 6am and Noah will let off a really load scary howl/bark (you know the one) and wont stop unless i tell him to be quiet, the reason i worry is because of the neighbours!! does anybody have any solutions??? is it just an age thing or a dominance issue?

Im sorry for rambling

Hannah & (a ver noisy) Noah

P.s have tried leaving radio on at night but to no avail.

I wonder if he would be more quiet if he were sleeping in your bedroom? Perhaps, if he were near his pack he would feel more secure and wouldn't need to bark as much.

I love that you still have a milkman. I lived in England for awhile as a teenager, and I loved that there was a milkman.

Do you know how much I would appreciate someone bringing milk to me everyday?!?

As for the barking, I don't have an answer, we have Nigel the Puppy, that is a barking fool! Much to our dismay, at times.

It might go away once he gets use to his new freedom. I know certain sounds trigger Snuffles especially car horns and car doors slamming. He is generally pretty quiet here. When we stay at "Aunt" Ellen's it takes him a day or 2 to adjust. In general it is a noisier neighborhood. That bad part is with 4 other dogs, if one starts they 3 of the 4 go, so sometimes it is hard to figure out who starts it.

Actually...there might be times you will be glad he barked...When one of mine goes off, all three do , but I can tell by the bark what is going on.. That is...I can tell the difference between "Oh my god, someone is here to kill us all .!" and "Hey! " (boof) "was that something I need to check out!? after all...he sees it as his job.....Julie

I tryed to let Zeke sleep outside of his crate but he does the same thing. I was wondering if he thought he was suppost to be the "watch dog" at night. He would go from window to window barking and howling.......I think at his reflection. Anyway, he's back in his crate again, and WE are sleeping through the night once more.

Citronella spray collar works wonders for my aunt's dog who can be pretty loud ... she only puts in on when they are out and at night so the neighbors don't lynch them (they live in a townhouse) she still barks when she REALLY wants to, but it has cut out the excessive/unprovoked barking.

Thanks for all your replys, well this morning for the first time in a fortnight i had a full night s sleep without any barking!!! which was great the trick was to leave his second walk until around 8.30 so he was exhausted when he came in. Its great having a milkman so much easier!! do you guys not get them in the US?? dont know what i woul do without mine lol

Well, Dani was barking a lot at night too. So I took an empty water bottle with a couple of pennies in it........when she barked, I leaped up and went in and tapped her on the head with it and told her "quiet". (Course we've worked "speak" and "quiet" so that she knows what that means.) Not a peep the rest of the night..........Anyway, next morning when I was leaving for work.........found out my car had been EGGED!!! So now, if she happens to bark, I always take a look outside before I correct her! Ha!

I was wondering how that collar works. I think I'm going to get it for Bruce. My husband keeps saying that we should have named him Bob as in Bob Barker..instead of Bruce. He seems to bark more for attention than anything else..not that he doesn't get enough of it  When I dry the other dogs..it is contstant....very annoying... I have to put him in the house. He will also bark when he wants to play etc. He is by far the most vocal newf we've had. Hence his name...kennel name's Look who's talkin':D
