Back end trim

Okay.. you would think I would have figured this out after nearly 3 years, but how the devil do you cope with the tail while trying to trip the back end! I always feel awkward trying to hold it out of the way while scissoring that yak butt! I'm tempted to take one of my alligator hair clips and curl it over his back!!

I tend to drape it over my shoulder so it stays in the crook of my neck.
Not always pleasantly fragrant but it works

Hahaha Both my dogs wag their tails furiously when I'm trimming back there. Makes it hard when you're constantly getting whacked in the face. But I'm glad they're enjoying my discomfort. It makes me laugh and it's better than a dog that clamps his tail down tight.

 I guess I've never had a problem with that. Both my current dogs have gay tails that tend to stay out of my way! I also usually do most of the rear-end grooming while they are laying down so I can usually position myself between the rear and the tail.

Willis tends to get mats starting around his man bits. So my DH holds treats/peanut butter spoon/watermelon in one hand and the tail in the other while I comb/clip them out. It's definitely a candid camera moment. We look like total fools, but it works! If it's me working alone, I sling his tail over my shoulder. I hadn't thought about a hair clip. Let me know if it works!

Get a helper to hold the tail out of the way, it's always much more fun to share the moment.
With our girls it's called the Brazilian treatment... no, no hot wax or duct tape we trim them with the clippers. With our girls it helps with the smell (that resthome smell you know) that they can get when they sit in their pee when they squat. We get by with more of a maintenance trim on our dogs as the do not show. This is done in the driveway on the grooming table so you can wave at traffic...

I also trim the crotch hair....I just do it the other way around. Sulley will lay on his back spread eagle for me, so I do the crotch trimming that way.

:) I think I'll try this.. Although it is probably more effective with a dog standing on a grooming table. I blew it when he was a pup and never succeeded in acclimating him to a raised table... so I'm working with him standing, attached to a grooming arm "Macgivered" to the footboard of an iron bed! So I'm sitting or kneeling behind him.. I'm trying to envision your method.. but I think it might work!

Oh Lord that made me laugh!

I just struggle through trimming that area. I try and put the tail over my shoulder but if it's wagging away then I get whacked in face and try again. Having someone else there to lend a hand helps the most. This is a good question as I'm sure we all go through it.
