Average time that female newfs go into heat?

I figured breeders would be the best to ask about this. We were told that it is much healthier to allow females go through one heat cycle. I plan on letting Koda go through it, the problem is I also have a male who is not neutered as per the breeders contract. I want to know if there are any warning signs because I couldn't handle a preggo Newfoundland. Also suggestions on diapers that would fit a big ole girl would be extremely appreciated. So far I havent found anything. Please help.

I would never take the chance and recommend to my puppy buyers to have their female spayed before the first heat.

I don't think I would trust a diaper or anything else...:)

Your boy should let you know or give you some sign before your girl actually comes in heat...he will be much more interested in her back end, may do some play posturing or may even trying riding her.

You will need to keep them separated when she's in heat and hopefully you have a very safe and secure way to do that...males have a way of finding ways to get to that bitch...:)

Good luck and be careful...:)

If you have an intact male, you shouldn't wait until your female has gone through one season to spay her. I think that's what LA meant.

Keeping males away from females in season isn't an easy task. A diaper sure isn't going to do it. Fences aren't all that successful either. Doors get destroyed. Windows get jumped through, etc.

Also...if she's in season do NOT let her outside alone, not even for a second! Males will appear from miles around. Oh...and that can cause a fight with yours and the "visitor".

So, at the barest minimum, you need a way to keep them separated. Having her in a crate in your sight helps...and he can be next to it. It calms the male, at times. Or you need separate rooms for them. Better yet...different addresses for that month.

First heat comes sometime between 9 -14 mos with most Newfs.

We had 7 month old Ty at the same time Sophie was in heat. Wire ties & locks on the crates with one in the crate and on the other side of a locked door at all times. They took turns being loose in the house with me. If I had to leave the house I took one of them with me. I did not leave them in the house together alone at all...not even in kennels behind locked doors. This was all done even though Ty wasn't too interested..don't get me wrong, he had interest, but was not super crazy about it. I think maybe because he was so young. If he had been crazier I would have moved him & me into the guest house away from her.

Oh I just realized that I did not mention that we will most definitely be boarding or having a friend watch our other dog when Koda is in season. We want the diapers not to prevent Spike from mounting her but to make sure our house is intact once she is done. So I will keep my eyes peeled for an increase in sniffing and mounting done by Spike. Any other behavioral signs that would be pretty obvious? Is a female able to conceive even on the first day that her heat is visible to the owners? I'm just so scared it will happen and we will notice it to late. Thanks for all the helpful information so far!

The best diaper I've found is a black plastic one that slips over the tail and snaps on both sides. It's made by Four Paws. I don't use the dog pads; instead I put human pads in them - make sure you change them frequently.

It's unusual for a female to be fertile on day one, but that shouldn't make you cavalier about this. The dogs don't read the books on when the fertile time occurs... Good luck.

How old is your male?

My male is about 8 months old. He is a shepherd/malamute/husky. Looks and acts like a wolf. Quite a handful, that one.

Just a story on the males coming from all around. My girl is in season right now and in the past 10 days 3 dogs have shown up in the front yard whining and barking. All 3 wearing very nice electronic fence collars. UGH. Haven't left her alone outside for a millisecond.

Probably the first thing you will notice is her behind will swell...(potty place) Shortly there after she will start to have a ' bloody show'...Amount depends on the bitch...12-14 DAYS AFTER THE BEGINNING OF THE CYCLE, the bleeding stops and it is the time when she is fertile, and will stand for a male...These are 'general' facts and they can very from that senerio. Males hang around outside and wait for the fertile period.. That 'ode de estrus' is hard to resist, and can be detected for a mile or more. Canines are the only animal that when inseminated, the seman attatches to the uterine wall and WAITS for the eggs to mature where they are fertilized in the uterus. Even the day the bitch is breed cannot be considered the day she got pregnant..always.

Can you please send me the info or link where the semen attaches to the uterine wall? This is something I have never heard of before.

Breeding Methods ( DOG BREEDING FOR BEGINNERS)

The Natural Method

A natural breeding takes place between the stud and the bitch with little or no human interference. The male mounts the bitch from behind and commences to mate with her. The sperm are mainly delivered during the period of the "tie", but some sperm may be delivered before that moment. The sperm will travel deeper and either meet up with the ovum for fertilization or attach themselves to the uterine wall and wait for the chemical/hormonal signal that lets them know the ovum have been released. They will then race toward the ovum in an effort to be the first one to fertilize them. Once a sperm fertilizes an egg, no other sperm can penetrate it.The fertilized eggs then implant themselves at intervals along the uterine horns where they will continue to develop until it's time for delivery.

You need to put up posters saying "If anyone is missing their male dog with an electronic fence collar on...he's at my house, patiently waiting for you to come get him off my front yard".

The sad part is those males may end up fighting. If YOU had a male at home, he'd definitely want to fight them because they're trespassing on HIS territory.

Louann..this paragraph did not come from the book I wrote on breeding and whelping. Lest you think so, I have added a couple of actual links. The Nat Geo special "In the Womb/dogs" also clearly explains this..

This made me laugh, and also shed light on how crazy this time is going to be for us eek! Wow it looks like Koda will be an indoor doggie during that time. We also have coyotes around and I'm sure they would be willing to mate with her too. I will probably end up just taking her out on the leash. And I thought human men were bad! Just kiddding!

This is very scary to me because my dogs sleep together and from the way this sounds, she could easily get pregnant before I even know she has gone into heat.
