I will be hosting my book club's meeting in October and need to recommend the book. Does anyone have a favorite author? Is there a book you've read that you just loved? I would love to hear about them!

Kim Edwards' "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" is a great one for a book club. I also really enjoyed Chris Bohjalian's "Midwives." Both would be very good for book clubs, in fact I'll probably pick one of them when it's my turn to host ours.

Just finished, Water For Elephants. I forget the authors name but everyone at bookclub really liked it.

I couldn't make it through "The Memory Keeper's Daughter." I thought it was a real drag and there wasn't one character I liked.

Merle's Door, Lessons from a Free Thinking Dog by Ted Kerasote!!!!!
This book is great and there is a Newfie in part of the story as well. If you have not read this book yet shut off the tv and go get it it will be well worth the read.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I'm going to get to our library and see what book everyone can get their hands on. As I looked over the online catalog, all of your suggested reading must be good...they are all checked out!!

You might want to check out Barnes and Noble site, bn.com. They have book club lists as well as discussion points on the books.

Also, check with your library. They might be willing to get books for you for your book club. Ours routinely orders in books for their book club. They also are looking at older books as well. I think Pearl Buck's book is one that book clubs have been reading lately.

Just a few thoughts.

I will second one BLuedog mentions above -- The Thirteenth Tale! Our book club just read it and it was AWESOME. Probably in my top 5 of favorite books ever!!! And it allowed for a lively discussion at book club as well.

Lately, I've been checking out books from the "Insprirational/Christian" section from my library. I've been addicted to Beverly Lewis' books, she writes a lot about the Amish, and she has a several series of books. There is something so nice about reading about how their community works, yet there is always a good story within.

I'm not Amish, but I admire them for their dedication. Boy, let me tell you, I realize how truly lazy I am too, but it actually motivates me too.

Marley & Me, such a great book for dog lover's~ about a loveable, crazy yellow lab who was afraid of storms, you will cry, it is soooo good.

The last time I hosted the book club I had them read "Marley & Me". They all enjoyed it.

Philippa, I've read the books by Beverly Lewis and agree...very good reading. I think I suggested one of her books a few years back.

Turns out that I have time to research further because I will be hosting the November meeting. But, I am leaning towards The Thirteenth Tale.

Some of my book club's faves have been:
"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel
"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini
"Empress Orchid" by Anchee Min
"Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight" by Alexandra Fuller
"Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley (this might be good for October!)
"Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen

Most members of my book club are also fans of Jodi Picoult and Amy Tan. We don't tend to read their books for club, because our members read these ones "outside" of book club reading.

It's funny you guys mention "Water for Elephants", as I'm currently reading it. I'm surprised all of you like it so much! I'm having a tough time getting through it. While it's an entertaining story, my heart sinks and I cringe through a lot of this material. Any of you who have read it know what I mean. I hope that !@#$!$#^ gets what he deserves by the end of the book... Poor Rosie.
