Another Artie Question

How do you get a Newfie puppy to stop playing in the rain and go potty????

Artie is a bit water obsessed. All he wants to do is drink from puddles - which, after a 2 month bout with giardia, we do not want him doing.

Also, indoor play suggestions?

I would just keep him on leash, in the rain, so you can keep him away from the puddles. Just keep telling him to "go pee" and don't allow him to play. You definately don't want to mess with the chance of him getting giardia again. My Roger had a bad case of it in 2008 and ended developing inflammatory bowel disease. I don't allow Roger or my other newfs near any puddles to drink from.

Thanks Jane. I have been doing the leash thing and it is funny b/c he keeps looking at me like "geeze, mom...privacy?" LOL

My Roger hate's being watched when he's going to the bathroom! Just turn your head and ignore him...LOL

Poppy likes to walk in the rain, and race through puddles. She doesn't, however, like to take potty breaks in the rain. She will hold it for a long time before she gives in. I hide behind the umbrella, that helps for getting her to go. We also have a code word, and often that will work.

I keep her on the leash and take good treats. When she starts mucking about in a puddle too much, I tell her, "Leave it!" then I click or say Yes! and give her a treat. After a couple of times, she is pretty much eating out of my hand. Literally.

Indoor play: We play the "find it" game. I show the girls one of their toys. I let them sniff it good, then I put them in a down/stay. I walk about the house, and have to make sure they aren't peeking, then I hide the toy. After hiding it and walking away from it, I clap my hands and tell them "OK, FIND IT!". The one who brings it to me gets a treat. Have to watch them, though, because sometimes the one who found it has it stolen from them, so the other one can try to claim the treat. :)

This is a great "rainy day" game.
