Anesthesia

Yesterday I brought Peanut to the vet for his 'pre opp' (neutering) appt. Vet did some blood work and called me back in the evening. I really can't remember exactly what he said, something about Peans Kidneys and if it would be safe to put him under? The vet wanted me to bring in a urine sampe, which I got it to the vet just before they closed. Said he would call me back today when more tests are done.

SO...Is there anything in particular I should be asking the vet when he calls me today?

Thanks Much

It sounds like your vet is being very thorough in a presurgical scan, and that's a great thing. Wait and see what they find out from the urine sample. They must be concerned about kidney function and making the decision whether he can safely have anesthetic or not...assessing the risks for your particular dog.

OK...finally got to talk to Vet.

BUN(?) # is 2.O and Creatine is normal. Vet thought Peans might be dehydrated? I don't think ANY chance of that, my kitchen floor proves that. Wants me to bring Peans back in 6-8 weeks for a re-check of everthing. I am happy Vet is being conscious.

But DAMM!!! With having a 'New Lady' in my house, I SO MUCH wanted to get his boy parts removed NOW!!! :goofy:

Sorry Lacy:darn:...but Daisy will keep defendening you!:)

BUN is blood urea nitrogen...It is a measure of the kidney's ability to clear waste products from the blood. (Urea and nitrogen are waste products.) Normal BUN is 6-24 in a dog. A low BUN can be an indicator of a problem or it can mean nothing. The fact that the creatinine is normal is a good sign.
Has Peanut been on any steroids at all? This can cause a low reading, as can low blood protein levels.
Many things can affect this reading, so the vet can get a more true reading by testing the urine. Just make sure you follow his directions exactly on the day the specimen is to be collected. He is just making sure that the kidneys are at full function before anesthesia.
Anesthesia is cleared from the body's organs by the kidneys also. If he is not able to clear the drugs as he should, he could have adverse reactions to the anesthesia. Your vet is just being thorough so he doesn't walk into an unforseen problem with your boy.
