My neighbors down the road stoped by yesterday with their two newfs to visit. Hank, a rescue/rehome, 7 yrs old and they have had him for about 6 months. He came to them shaved, previous owners told them that they did it because he has terrible allergies and has "issues" with being brused. Well, his fur is coming in very nicely now and I was able to brush him for 20 minutes. The only "issue" I had was that I was unable to brush his back because he was rolling around on it wanting his tummy brushed!:D

But, their vet IS telliing them to KEEP him shaved, BECAUSE the long hair will attract and hold in the allergions?????????

Sounds odd, to me. I wonder if the "alleriges" presented themselves as hotspots and in turn, it was easier to keep the hair short so it would keep the skin dry.

I'd think that if they were dealing with contact allergens..coat would keep it away from the skin...and the other allergens are either ingested or inhaled..so in that respect won't make much difference. It would help them see if he was reacting to something though.

Keeping him shaved will help him dry more quickly, which WILL reduce any incidence of moist dermatis or staph infections. It will also make skin lesions much easier to detect, so I don't think the vet is totally off base, if the dog has a history of allergies and hotspots.

Reminds me of my opthalmologist, who tells me my bangs shouldn't extend past the tops of my eyebrows because "dander" will fall into my contact lenses... (Mamie Eisenhower, here I come!) Seriously, if the dog tolerates brushing, I'd wait and see how it goes.

FWIW, Kimber did have contact allergies. However, as long as I bathed her monthly with Chlorhexaderm she did fine and I didn't have to shave her and she didn't get hot spots.

Yes, vet thinks it is contact allergies. I will pass on the Chlorhexaderm info to them. thanks
