Airlines

Hi everyone! I'm helping a fellow NN'er fly her newly adopted rescue out from CO. I figured this would be a good place to ask what your favorite airlines are that you use to ship pups. This sweet girl is a bit of an old lady, and we're concerned with making it the most comfortable journey, with the least amount of a stress for her as possible. We also want to make sure her cargo area is air conditioned. Thanks for any advice you can give!

First you want to make sure you get a direct flight. Continental has pressurized /climate controlled cargo holds. I shipped a puppy using them, I was very impressed. They kept the puppy in the cargo check in area till about 15 minutes before the flight was scheduled for take off. They took it by van right to the plane. They put ice in the puppy's water dish before they 'sealed' the crate using wire warps so it couldn't open accidentally.

When we shipped Brutus Continental used to have a VIP service. The dog was not in the cargo and it was a temperature controlled area, it was great. I do see it on their website anymore, but you may want to call and check. It is probably the same service the posters above are referring too.
Here is some more info..

If the fellow NN'r could drive to Baltimore (closest airport I think), maybe consider this..

Continental is one of the few, if any, airlines that doesn't have an embargo in the summer time for shipping dogs. I have always been pleased with the way they have handled my puppies and adult dogs.

Suggest having two crate fans on full at all times if using the standard plastic airline crates. Also pick an airline crate that has maximum ventilation such as a wire back and large vented areas on the side and possibly the top.

Full documentation should be taped to the top of the crate with info on the dog's name and owners and the flight number with destination times and contact people at start and arrival.

Thank you everyone, for your advice and suggestions! This is a great HUGE starting point! We're really hoping to get her to her forever home as soon as possible so that she can spend the last few years of her life in a home full of love and affection.

I used Continental to fly Indy out of the country and back using www.petsfly.com. Bobby was awesome. That was back in 2003 and 2005 so don't if they are still around. If not, I'd definitely go straight with Continental.

folks...I think the Airlines are all embargoed now due to heat.....depending on where you are going or comming from, but I don't know where it is under 85 degrees.

When I looked at flying down to get Sulley, they only two airlines that were even almost an option were delta and continental. I really liked the way continental looked. We didn't end up doing that, so I don't know how well it works.
