Hi everyone, I'm sorry to ask so many questions on here and I want to first say thank you so so much for all of your feedback and suggestions, it has been so so helpful!!

Okay so here's the newest with Denali. The update on his joints is that the vet seems to think he is growing into his body at a better rate now and although his front legs still look a little "ducky" like, Denali's radius is slowly catching up to his ulna in his front legs.

Our vet suggested we feed him half puppy/half adult food which has been good. We are feeding him Holistic Select Large and Giant breed puppy food which is 23% protein, 1.0% calcium, .80% phosphorus, which our vet said was awesome so we FINALLY found a food that works and then we mix it with their large breed adult food.

Denali's eats a little more than 6 cups of dog food a day (2 cups three times a day). When he is done eating he runs around the house whimpering and tries to eat our other dogs' food. He has had periods in the past where he is not interested in his food and eats less, but lately that is not the case. He is now eating poop when he goes outside and the last time he did this poop eating this was at 4 months old when he went through a crazy growth spurt and when we fed him a little more it curbed the poop eating.

So here's my question: have your newfs gone through growth spurt periods where they are just hungrier? Do you feed them more?

He is now eating 6 sometimes close to 7 cups of dog food a day which is the recommended feeding amount, should he be eating more? He's also on the larger side for a newf his age (I think) with a weight of 81 lbs at 6.5mos. He is not fat by any means. We can still feel his ribs and his stomach is not fat at all. He looks like he is growing taller and longer this past week. Any thoughts regarding eating amounts during growth spurts possibly??

Up his food especially if he isnt fat, mine have gone through various stages of if they could open the feed bin its gone whereas other times they arent as hungry.

We also give veggies and certain fruits to our tribe too and they love carrots

Only you can tell if he needs more food. You should be able to feel the ribs but not the spine. I fed my dogs green beans when they act unusually hungry. The green beans adds bulk but no calories.

Years ago Adam would eat poop. When I switched his food he stopped. Not that switching food will work for all dogs, it did for Adam. I assumed there was something he needed that the food didn't provide enough of.

Thank you! That's helpful and we will try some green beans and carrots. I guess 6-7 cups seem like a lot of dog food. If we increased his amount to 8 cups would that be too much? Has anyone fed their newf that much? We thought about switching his dog food but he's been on it for a while before he started eating poop and from previous experience with Denali he's just hungry still.

You can also feed him pineapple, which apparently stops them from eating poop.

If his weight is good, I'd stick with what you're feeding now. Some newfs will eat all day if you let them. Maggie was that way. She'd give the sad eyes and eat anything and everything in her path. Just because.

Adding veggies like green beans is a great idea as well.

Oooh we will try pineapples too, that sounds great! It's just unusual because we usually have to coax him to eat his food and the last time he did this crazy food hunting/poop eating thing was when he grew a lot at 4 months so I'm curious as to how much is too much regarding his food. But I love all the suggestions with veggies and fruits so thank you and we will definitely try that :)

The pineapple will stop him from eating his own poop not that of other dogs. If he is eating other dog's poop they need the pineapple. It makes the poop taste bad although I cannot imagine it tasting good! I'd give green beans before I feed carrots. Carrots will turn to sugar causing a spike and they will get hungry faster. They will do the same for people. At least that has been my experience.

He may just need more volume - veggies - green beans, carrots, etc. They do hit one particular spell where they gain a pound a day sometimes and need to eat unimaginable amounts, but just for a short time - a couple of weeks. Sounds like he's hungry, but he probably doesn't need as much as he thinks he does, thus the veggies, etc.

My 19 week Newf eats up to 9 cups a day during growth spurts, he's 59 pounds. Vet isn't concerned because he is on the slender side, said to feed him 4 times a day instead of 3.

Thank you! Our vet also shared that we could break the meals up into four times a day so that it doesn't seem overwhelming to him eating so much per meal at three times a day. He is 90lbs at 7months. I can still feel his ribs and when he's wet he looks like a slender guy so I'm not worried that he's over weight, but I just thought feeding him 7-8 cups a day seemed like a lot! He has slowed down on the poop eating since we increased his food intake.
