Hello, I've been lurking here for awhile but thought it was about time to introduce myself. Let me start off by saying that a lifelong dream is finally coming true!!! I'm getting a newf!!!
I remember when I was 9 and I saw my first Newfoundland. I was with my parents and me and my Dad fell in love with this 'big black bear' that the owners insisted was dog!!! That day I swore that I too, would own a newf.
Well, twenty-five years later (now you all know my age!) I'm about to get my first newf! Which will be even more special because my Father passed away almost 13 years ago and it's been like a promise to him that one day I would own his dream dog.
Speaking of dogs, I currently have a full pack! I am a manager of a non-profit animal sanctuary where we have almost 500 animals, most of which are farm animals. I live at the sanctuary which is a 55acre farm in WV. Back to my personal pack. I have the following furkids-which ARE my children and are with me pretty much 24/7!
Kiana 8 y/o male basset
Drummer 3 y/o male PBGV
Hesta 2 y/o female basset
Fancy 2 y/o beagle who came to me from Arkansas. She was in a fire and 1/3 of her body was severely burned. Her heart and lungs have severe smoke damage.
Bella 11 y/o Eng. Bulldog who just came to me last year. She is in advance stages of lung cancer.
***all are spayed/neutered***
My dogs are with me 24/7!!! My office is attached to my farmhouse and when I'm inside doing paperwork, they are in the office. I have 3 huge dog beds & a couch for them. Plus, their very own TV to listen to. I have a large fenced-in yard off of the office which leads back to the sanctuary. So, if I'm working outside with the animals, the dogs can see me from their yard. I take my dogs 'running' on the sanctuary grounds every night which all 55 acres are securely fenced-in. They get to see many animals (pigs, lots and lots of pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, cats, horses, cows, donkeys, turkeys, ducks, chickens)!
I've done basset rescue for years (and all-breed rescue). This is really my first time 'shopping' for a dog and it's been challenging. Being in the animal welfare field, I see first hand the result of people not doing their research/homework-so I've been trying to do it right.
I'm hoping to get my newf within the next month!!! And I'm looking at both adults and puppies. I wouldn't mind getting an adult as long as he/she will fit into my pack. I even went and purchased a king size bed so there will be room for my new newf! All of my guys sleep with me and we definately needed a bigger bed.
I've done canine obedience training for years and only use positive reinforcement. I even did agility with my oldest basset (talk about a challenge & then my pbgv did some agility) However, I must admit that my current pack are quite spoiled since they are with Mom ALL the time. Now, if I leave to run errands for an hour or so, they get terribly upset!
I do educational tours at the sanctuary, so we always have visitors. I also go to schools to speeches on proper animal care and usually take one of my dogs with me.
Well, enough about me. I just wanted to finally say hello. I have learned so much from this board and I look forward to sharing my experiences with all of you once my newf finally comes home!!!
