A Real Bear?

So....we've been having problems with coyotes in our neighborhood lately. We're in a suburban area but along woods and a river that stretches up into Michigan's thumb and lower peninsula. On our nightly walks, I'm used to the dogs stopping to stare at something I can't see, and even though it's a bit creepy, I'm not too worried with two dogs with me.

But the other night I smelled the most god-awful odor at two spots (along the woods side of the street) on our walk. I smelled it on one street, then turned the corner along the woods and smelled it again maybe 1/4 mile later. I came home and said to my husband that the last time I had smelled something like that had been in the Appalachians back when I was a teenager a loooong time ago. Our guide had said it was bear. Anyone who's smelled bear knows what I mean.

That was Wed. Last night a neighbor pulled up in his car to ask if we'd lost Ben. He happened to be snoozing in the foyer at the time, so I said, no, he was inside. The neighbor said a friend of his had said he'd seen a "bear" running loose in the woods and in the area. I said, no I'm always with Ben, even in the woods, and was amused that the neighbor's friend thought my Newfie was a bear.

I told my husband this and he said, well, you DID smell bear the other night..... :shocker:

They would be asleep this time of year, right?

And does this tie in with two fully armed deputies in sheriff's vans at the front of my street about 2 weeks ago who said they were looking for a "husky" that was running loose? They weren't even animal control officers.

Now I'm wondering!! All coincidence...or...? Stay tuned!

How cold has it been in Michigan this year? Maybe the bear didn't hibernate totally and woke up looking for food? I would get some bear spray to take along on walks if I were you! Black bears are pretty aggressive so I would be careful just in case!

It's a typical Michigan winter. 20's and 30's. I don't know what bear spray is, but I *do* know what bear BAIT looks like: my chubby little Scooter dog!

Someone told me a great 'weapon' to carry along if you need to discharge it at a distance is a can of wasp spray. Anyone else heard of this? Seems cruel, but I've heard people suggest that single women keep it on their nightstands because it can shoot 20 feet or so.

That's totally scary! We've had coyotes around our neighborhood recently but I don't worry with our three dogs walking with me but a bear?!?! Yikes!

I know you can get "bear mace". If it is a black bear they usually run rather than get closer to people.

I don't know if you ever walk with Ben off leash, but please don't for a while. If they are on the lookout for a bear, and ready to shoot, and they see Ben ... that would be horrible! Be careful!

I think even bears are confused with the changes in weather and might venture out in winter. We have a black bear who seems to be popping up around town lately...and no, it's not one of my Newfs. We live in a very woodsy, rural area. Lots of coyotes and foxes too.

No, wasp spray will NOT work on a bear but it will work on humans! Good to have if an intruder is trying to get in your house or car etc. supposed to be good, just aim and spray for the eyes..But yes, there is such a thing as Bear Spray and it is essential to have on hikes here in Utah. I am sure you can find it in Michigan also...and black bears are VERY aggressive. So, please do be careful!!

O dear, you were all supposed to reassure me it COULDN'T be a bear.

Who knows. I am on alert. I walk Ben on the leash along the streets but off-leash in the woods, but they're very open now due the lack of foliage and loss of trees (dutch elm disease, ash borer, etc) so I should be able to see anything coming. Still, scooping up 3 dogs and running would be difficult.

Maybe a bright orange vest or something else bright on Ben for awhile along with those bear bells I remember seeing on Sandra's dogs. I would be too scared to walk them off leash in the woods for awhile, never know if they would run after a bear or coyote to protect you.

I like Lori's suggestion of putting something on Ben that would make it clear he is NOT a bear, and get some of those bear bells and bear spray.

I have a really light reflective vest for Maggie. It was pretty inexpensive, but makes me feel better about walking her at night (we don't have street lights).

Good advice guys....I'm not usually skittish, but the smell PLUS a neighbor saying his friend saw a bear running loose.... I don't know! Think if I just tied one of my work scarves around Ben's neck it would be good enough? A nice yellow maybe, or pink? :) Kidding - will look into an orange vest.

Ever since 2 black bears were caught on the same day where Orka walks I dress him in bright vests with blinking lights.

The visibility jacket has a loop sewn on top for the light. Have both green & orange vests, lots of other vests. I use these lights on all Orka's harnesses / vests and also some other types of lights.

Not only does it keep him visible but it says loud and clear, "I am a well taken care of domestic dog with owner close" instead of "I am a wild bear" although screams and shrieks still follow.

The lights also come in handy in restaurants. Keep them on so ppl will not trip on Orka. He does not fit under most tables.

We have black bears in our neighborhood, I carry bear spray and put a cow bell in my pocket. As long as you make noise the bear will stay far away.

One scented our front porch last year. Gross.
