  • While Orijen and Acana are made by the same company, Orijen is the premier brand and has more meat. The three "grain free Acana products, particularly their fish kibble, Pacifica, are still good foods.

Fromm is from yesteryear just like Eagle Pack. Unless the nutrient info shows the meat percentage, you can assume it is 25% or less (AAFCO standards); any company that betters AAFCO standards is only too anxious to let everyone know.
Thanks for the information. My newf is from Coffeycove Kennels which is up your way (I think). So are you an Orijen fan over Acana? Is there any other dry dog food you would suggest? What about FROMM? I trust your opinion as I know you have great experience in this area and your dogs are beautiful!
Eagle Pack's fish formula in its day was the best kibble going; it was the only kibble containing fish meal that got a permit from the US Coast Guard so that they could use fish meal not preserved with ethoxoquin. However, since 2007 when meat based, grain free formulas became available, it is no longer a food that I recommend. Even though you are adding fish, the grain level is too high; most grain containing kibbles average 60% grain. Their holistic food not only contains the high level of grain but the meat portion is not based on the ancestral diet of the Newf.

Also, you should not add a liquid multi-vitamin; any properly balanced feed will have the appropriate vitamins. Supplements can help but they should be specific, not across the board.
    Hi Peter,

I remember that at one point you use to give your Newfs Eagle Pack. Do you no longer recommend that food? I have a 3 year old Newf with dry skin and I have tried different dog foods with different protein sources including but not limited to: FROMM, CORE WELLNESS, ACANA, ORIJEN, SOLID GOLD, TASTE OF THE WILD. She is supplemented with a liquid multi-vitamin and she gets sardines and other fish with her kibble. What do you think of Eagle Pack Holisitic?
Sorry to hear that you can't get Orijen. Acana is good though and should hold your boys until the Orijen is back.
Hey Peter...at this point we can not get Orijen...we are now feeding Acana. I am so upset by this...our boys have been so healthy on Orijen. I also order 2 30 lb bags and when we are down to one I order another 2 bags. I have not been able to get Orijen now for almost a month.
Time to bust-out a paper cracker with toys and paper crowns..and make a real party of it..hats for the puppers too..perhaps? :) ina n HB n Kesa
    Hi Heidi,

Because the pure unrefined sockeye salmon oil contains high levels of vitamin D, which may affect bone growth in an adolescent Newf, I strongly recommend that you not give the supplement until all your Newf's growth plates are closed. Normally this happens at 14 months and that is why I suggest waiting until your pup is 15 months of age before such supplementation.

    Newfondly,

    Peter
    Hi Heidi,

I give my Newfs over 15 months of age two teapoons (10 ml) a day. You can give one teaspoon (5 ml) ups to 3 teaspoons (15 ml) per day.

I administer it by dosing syringe to ensure that the Newfs get it all.

Make sure you do not supplement with cod liver oil or halibut liver oil or any other vitamin A or D supplements while using unrefined sockeye salmon oil.

    Newfondly,

    Peter
Hi Peter. I just bought the vital choice sockeye salmon oil, and I was just wondering how much of it you feed a day to your newfs? It is the one with the pump top. Ben is now almost 9 months old. Thank you. Heidi
Thanks Peter. She LOVES the salmon, her coat and skin look great and from the knowledge I have gained on NN I think we will stick with the salmon!
    Hi Blacklightning,

Your vet is going by theory. In practice I have found no problem with supplementing with canned fish.

While it is not necessary to supplement Orijen 6-Fish, you can make a great diet even better with canned salmon.

    Newfondly,

    Peter
    Hello Peter,
I left a post in the food and diet forum and a couple people told me to contact you regarding my question.

Ayasha is fed Orijen 6 fish as well as 1/3 a can of sockeye salmon (7oz can) once a day. She is being fed 3 a day. Our vet didn't like that we were giving her salmon. She said she was worried that we were unbalancing an already balanced kibble by adding extra protein and calcium and thinks it would be better just to give her salmon oil to get the extra omega-3, but not the extra protein and calcium. Is this something we should be worried about?

    Thanks Peter
