What kind of Doggie door to use

We are needing to install a doggie door. The one we had in SD was fine except for the occasional stray cat that came inside. Here in Nebraska we have wind and rattlesnakes
. Has anyone used the kind of door that the dogs wear a collar with a door opener on it? I am not thrilled about them wearing a collar. Any suggestions on doors.

To much freedom for a young growing newf is not a good thing, they can end up being very naughty becouse one on one structured time is not being used, people forget that they need to do leash training and potty training on leash, and rely on the doggie door to save them the hassle.
hopefully if you do get a pup, you make sure to keep up with the training.
i have not heard of anyone with the collar thingie for dogs but have for cats.

I just ordered in two doors for a new construction. I agree with SAR that young dogs/puppies also need the leash training. The ones I got have a barrier that you can slide in to close them when not in use.You can google dog doors and their are all types imagineable. The simple metal ones on a spring are too flimsy for my purposes. They do have the kind that a collar activates if you want.If you can't find them, send me a PM. Julie

Our two Newfs are 5 and 3 and well house trained. We did not just get into the breed. I was just looking for information on anything new that might be out there. The one we used had a plastic flap for entry. It did have a metal door to slide in to close so the animals could not go in or out.
Thanks Julie for the info. I will let you know how well the collar ones work if we do go that way.

We are also in the process of looking at Doggie doors. We found one at Home Depot that we liked. I tried to get a link right to it for you, but I guess i'm not as smart as I thought I was. :( Anyway, if you go to Home Depot's website and type in "Pet Safe extra large aluminum pet door" you will see it.. It's $124.97 and they say a dog up to 220 lbs can fit through it.. It looks like a pretty good one. We actually saw it at the store too, not just on the website. The guy took it out of the box and showed us how to install it, and it has the aluminum door that slides down and locks. I think it's the one we are going to get.

We just installed the white PetSafe Classic extra large doggie door (up to 220 lbs). I ordered it online for less than $100 with free shipping. Riley has always used a doggie door, but Maggie, our Golden rescue was "doggie door challenged" for about 2 days! They have access to this doggie door during the day when we're home. It saves having to run to the door each time one wants out.

The style I got is more expensive...but it has two plexiglass doors that swing open and close. Thought it might keep out varmits

Thanks so much for all the info. We will make a decision this weekend.
Jennifer the area in SD was 22 miles NW of Custer at 6500 ft elevation. I froze the 14 years we lived there and apparently so did the snakes. Even the old timers said they had never seen a rattler there. The weather is changing, it actually got up into the 80's our last summer there. Maybe the snakes will want to do some vacationing there and leave us alone in NE.
