Weight issues

Hi all,

Curious about Teddy's weight. They think he's about 14 weeks but he only weighs 25 lbs and it's the right weight for him, he's not underweight at all and is a regular chunk. As far as I can tell Newf puppies should weigh at least 30 lbs at 3 mos? ...So is this really under for a Newf pup? Could this be another hint as to his parentage? Like if it's really off for a pure Newf then maybe it's a clue that he has Lab or whatever in him? Or maybe they have his age wrong?

Sorry it's just been my mission to find out *what* he is!

Update, he and Bunny are thick as thieves now and playing and causing a general ruckus. They are so cute together, a real contrast. He's come out of his shell wonderfully and walks nice on the leash now, isn't so shy or scared anymore, and I've only had him for less than a week! I took them to a pet fair I was volunteering at and I was so proud at how far he's come.
I just had to share!

Big smiles,
Caroline

I would not be too worried about just 5 lbs. Teddy probably has been through a lot and may take some extra time to develope and get her growing back on track. Hey even if she in not pure Newfie--who cares? You got a wonderful companion and you saved the life of a precious puppy. From the way it sounds Teddy is coming around in leaps and bounds. God bless you for all you are doing for her

Ummm, my boys that are big boned were not 30 pounds at 3 months.
they were 23 to 25 pounds.
also it is hard to say exactly what you are dealing with till he is done growing.

normally i go by this guide and find it is correct, once they hit 4 months, after that they should be approximatly 10 pounds over the age they are in months so at 4 months about 45-50 pounds at 5 months 55-60 pounds
remember to, they all grow at different rates and the lower protein foods keep them from growing to fast, my syd goes in to be weighed on thursday i can post the weight he is at at 15 weeks.

Someone posted a weight chart for a male newf that was taken from a book by Emily Bronson(?) and it shows that they should be almost 20lbs over the age they are in months. Yogi just turned 6 mo. last week and weighed in at 86lbs this saturday. On that chart, it says that at 6 mo. should be about 88lbs. He's not overweight by any means, and we've been trying to guide his weight gain based on that chart. He gains around 10 lbs. per month. By looking at the chart, it looks like he shouldn't have any more big weight gains anymore and his weight gain should start tapering off now (ie. 7mos---should be 101 lbs, 8 mos.---107 lbs, etc. and by 12 mo.---119 lbs)

You are right, I am always looking at the book by Emily Bruno "The Newfoundland". Brady is now 6 mo as well and he weighs 88 pounds. This is a great book. Speaking of weight, Brady is staring at me right now saying "please feed me"...... Guess I had better respond.

Thanks so much for your input! I'll have to go get that book-- I'm sure it's on Amazon or something. Jeannie thanks for the good wishes
Sarnewfie thanks, that makes me feel better! 'Cause Teddy is on low protein food and I don't want him to gain fast, just wanting to see how he compares. I would love to see how much Syd weighs! He is so beautiful.

Not that being a mix would make me love him any less... I love him just the way he is... but I really want to be able to get him an ILP. He really is just a regular chunk of love... just lays around "talking" to me all the time.

Thanks for sharing all of your experiences!

as of today, i weighed Sydney, he is very large boned, and growing very slow, he is 4 months old and 40 LBS.
i have found that in my own newfs that the weight charts are a bit exaggerated DUE to different growth rates, and due to the food fed.
