Am emphatic YES. I would say a Newf that does this is more the norm than the exception! They seem to be renowned for it.

We eventually got sick of swimming through the kitchen so we put her water bowl just outside the back door. We either have the door open all the time or else she 'knocks' at the door very loudly (ie - impossible to ignore) if she wants to go out for a drink.

Unfortunately we have also caught her drinking from the toilet bowl, something I was sure she'd never do.

Oh yes, what a normal newf pup you have! That is if you go by Molly's behavior! The first night home, 10 weeks old, she momentarily escaped from my view and we found her entirely in the toilet!!! She was soaked and quite happy. We removed her from the bowl and scolded her. She still splashes in it anytime she finds the lid up.

We have a large wide bucket for drinking water outside. She puts both front feet in the water bowl, splashng out the water, making it muddy much to everyone elses dismay and then thinks she's going to walk through the kitchen with her wet mops. I change the water probably 8 or 9 times a day now. All because Molly makes mudpies.

It's good to hear your newf is a "perfect" specimen of the breed!!

YES tuggs does the same thing only now he will be 1 year old this april 7th. Now when it rains here it is a nightmare because we just recently fenced in our back yard almost an acre but right at my back door it is a low spot , so when it rains water stands there . And of coarse tuggs runs back and forth until it becomes muddy then decides he wants to come in , and of coarse i let him in . I think u get the picture . i know i mopped the kitchen floor every 15 min. that day. not to mention he wants in then he wants out , and that game goes on all day long. But that is just a newfie for u !

Yep, normal Newfie behavior
We've got a picture of Kodi pawing the water out of his water bowl. He did this till we got him his Buddy Bowl.

Hey Rudy if you think this is bad just wait till he's 9 months old and 125 lbs and does this.
Or better yet wait till he goes and takes a drink from your toilet, not a pretty site when you sit on it only to have a really wet bum. (LOL)
Welcome to the land of Newfs. Best of luck.

Boy do I remember those days.
We just keep telling Tay no and taking her to her pool everytime she "swam" in her water bowl. It took a while but these days she knows her water bowl is for drinking and her pool is for swimming. Not that she can really fit in the pool anymore.

At our house we noticed a direct correlation between paddling about in the waterbowl and the level of water in the bowl. If we fill the bowl Alice will go crazy digging and splashing about, but if we just put an inch or two in the bowl she doesn't seem so tempted. This means refilling frequently, but cuts down on the kitchen puddles.

Our newfie puppy did that the first few weeks after we brought him home. We got him a raised water/food bowl that is height adjustable for when he gets older and taller. I think that has helped him not "play" in his water bowl as it is higher off the floor. Plus, the height adjustable feeding bowls are much better for his posture.

When Fezzik is out back he won't get a drink from his water bucket. Instead he will wade out into the pond/mud puddle until he is about chest deep and suck up as much water/mud as he wants. Of course after he is done he will come over to see you and say hi.

Be glad that it is only a water bowl that he is playing in.

Our current little Newfie girl luckly, is a little prissy and does not do this. However, our last boy loved to tip his food and water dish over and just lay in it. He was in heaven! There is no such thing as a no-tip dish when it comes to a Newf. You have to make your own. We bought the biggest heaviest water dish we could find, then drilled it to a heavy piece of plywood. He could not tip that sucker over. Although, this will not help you if your puppy likes to run his paws through the water dish.

Good luck with your new puppy!

Maybe a cement dish with a gutter system all around it? :O

I sure do wish my tomboy Molly was a little more prissy! She's most happy when she's sopping wet and muddy.

My biggest problem is that my foster girl, devi, knows how to open the lid of the toilet. But... she doesn't know how to close it. Molly thinks Devi is wonderful.

Sounds just like Willie - if he can't create waves in his water bowl, he's disappointed. You may want to consider the flat-sided buckets that you can hang outside your pups' crate (presuming you're crate training him). The hooks on the bucket stabilize it - it's worked for us.

I know there are a lot of posts on this but had to laugh at the typical newf water loving behaviors. We replaced the kitchen floor twice before we discovered "The Original Buddy Bowl" I was a complete skeptic and asked the Petco store manager to give me a card that said if it tipped over on my kitchen floor that I could return it no matter how ugly it was! He did, so I bought the 30 dollar piece of plastic and have been amazed. He can pick it up if the water level gets low but even if it tips over it doesn't spill! Same floor now for 5 months...woo hoo

Juli, Kodi has had the Buddy Bowl since he was 8 weeks old. It was the only thing that worked, that he couldn't paw the water out of. Now at 11 months old, he's drinking water from the feeding station that GAD has instructions for on his website. The Buddy Bowl has been moved outside
