Vomiting for three days

Cleo has been throwing up bile once or twice a day for the past three days. I took her to the vet twice x-rays and lab work are normal. She was given Sucralfate which did not help. Then she was given Cerenia. She has been on a bland diet of boiled chicken, white rice and cottage cheese for a few days. She has also recently completed a dose of antibiotics for kennel cough (24 hours prior to the start of the vomiting). Any ideas or comments?

Is it possible that the antibiotic upset her stomach?

What was she given? Sometimes antibiotics do cause stomach upset.

Or....is it possible that she has something else going on?

How often does she eat? Perhaps she needs to have more frequent, smaller meals for a while. And perhaps some Pepcid AC.

I'd also start, if you aren't already, giving her probiotics. Go to the health store and get some strong ones in the refrigerated section. Open capsules and sprinkle on her food - one capsule per meal. This should help straighten out her gut.

If for any reason she needs to go on antibiotics again, make sure you leave 2-3 hrs between giving them and the probiotics.

Also...when our Ray did this, he had Lyme disease. Doesn't mean she does, however. Just a thought.

I hope she's feeling better soon.

something is wrong and if this vet did not help you i would go to a different one.
as ardea suggested that is a possibility but, that is not normal and i would have high tailed it elsewhere to get an answer.
good luck!

Are you giving the antibiotics on an empty stomach. That can reak havoc on anyone. I'd stop them for a day or two (call your vet first) get things back to normal then start again

Then again it might be an obstruction that can't be viewed on xrays - something plastic or cloth...

Cleo can be sensitive to the antibiotic she was given (cephlaxen sp?). I know this so I only give it to her with food. The second time I took her to the vet I saw a different one who was much more concerned then the first one, she is the one who did the xrays and blood work. Since she started Cerenia for vomitting she has not vomitted. One hurdle cleared.
I am going to keep her on the bland diet for a total of 5 days and the slowly start her on kibbel again.
She eats twice a day and I started her on small meals and now I can tell she is feeling better and wants more food so I have been giving her more rice and cottage cheese and started to add the chicken.
I have thought about the probiotics but she is so sensitive to things that I have held off on them for the time being, but maybe I should start them anyway.
This has been very hard because she is 9 and I did not feel like the first vet cared about her vomitting, and knowing her I knew it was not normal.
Plus I just moved to another state and am with new vets and they do not know her so thank you everyone for the info.

Hope Cleo is feeling better soon. How long ago did you move? Sometimes the change in water supply can also cause some digestive upsets.

I moved here the end of August, but she was going to doggie day care 2 days a week because work was far from home and I wanted her to get to play. That is where she got the cough, even though she was vaccinated for it.
Cleo is doing much better, she has not vomitted since Monday night and she is showing signs of wanting other food. Which she has not been doing since she got sick 3 weeks ago. So I am very glad about that.

Emily,
Just keep an eye on her. A few weeks ago, Bojie had been vomiting bile for a few days, for some strange reason, it was at 4am every night, then it went away for a few weeks, but then he started up again, this time he became somewhat lethargic, then the vomiting started after he ate anything, when that started, I took him to the vet right away, he had a fever too, lab work and xrays were showed nothing. Vomiting persisted, took him back for an xray with barium which was when my vet notice a part of his intestines was inflamed. He gave him IV fluids, some meds, I brought him home to watch him overnight with an IV, and thank God he ended up passing a hard piece of twisted plastic the next morning. I was very lucky. If he didnt pass it, it would have meant surgery. Just dont want you or poor Cleo to go through anything near what I did!
