Great job!! I have to ask you or anyone else that does water training with their dog, I noticed he was wimpering a bit. Millie does this all the time when she swims... Does anyone know why???

I think it's not whimpering. I was concerned the first few times he swam, but I think it's just the speed of the air coming in and out of his nostrils that makes it sound whistle-y. He still needs all the air he's usually movin' through that big ol' mouth but it all needs to come from his nose...that's my theory.

My evidence is purely anecdotal, and it's mostly based on the fact that he's more than happy to swim around like that indefinitely. I'd think if he were actually whining he wouldn't be as excited about water.......right?

Tons of Newfs make that noise when they swim. It's nothing to worry about. You may want to use a bigger ball or bumper. I'd be concerned he could swallow that one...

My guess is it's the amount of air that's expelled, whether it's through the nose or mouth; coupled with the way they hold the object.

We hear it from a lot of dogs during training; for some, it's just exertion - think of the difference in your breathing from when you're walking to when you're running!

As you get into water training with these dogs there are many that make noise. It's like people that grunt when lifting, whistle while they work, whatever, Newf sonar. It is just the thing they do, quite unique I think.
We have trained with dogs that "chirp" and one I can think of reminds me every time I hear another do the same. Sadly he has passed but I think of him chirping along as he swam. Enjoy it while it's there. PS Get some bumpers to train with.

Oh ya,
That beautiful little face in the end of your video...is going to control your life more than you could ever imagine. But in a great and wonderful way.
