This may be of interest to some of you. I checked into it but it is just for dogs with appendicular osteo that have had amputation and 4 rounds of chemo.

New cancer vaccine for dogs with osteosarcoma

Researchers at PennVet are conducting a clinical trial to determine whether a novel Listeria based vaccine can stimulate anti-tumor immunity and prolong survival in dogs diagnosed with osteosarcoma. For more information on the vaccine and the study itself please contact VCIC at 215-573-0302 or vcic@vet.upenn.edu or contact Dr. Nicola Mason directly at nmason@vet.upenn.edu

They have one for melanoma too. My parent's lab was diagnosed with melanoma on the back of her tongue in August of 2010. She went to Ohio State to get the vaccine one a month for three months.

The tumor would continue to grow, and they had it de-bulked twice. Finally in May of 2011 they decided they had out her through enough and she went to The Bridge in my father's arms.

We don't know if the 8 months they had with her were due to the vaccine or not. Yes, the tumor still grew but maybe it was at a slower rate than it would have.

She was twelve years old, and while the vaccine was still so new, it didn't have any documented adverse effects. They enrolled her in the trial knowing it probably wouldn't work, but maybe they could learn something from her that would help another dog down the road.

Hi
Thanks for posting this info. I have checked into this one and other clinical trials. You are correct that the patients have to have had amputation and chemo for this one. Other studies require a confirmed biopsy as well...which you wouldn't think would be so hard to obtain if your Newf has cancer. Timber had 4 biopsy samples taken from her tumor and all were nonconclusive. The recovery was too brutal for me to attempt it again, especially when 3 Vets have all said she definitely has osteosarcoma.
Anyhow, I've contacted them all anyway to see if they'll treat us for a fee or donation or anything. I've had no takers so far...but for future dogs this vaccine will be a great thing.

My lab also had the vaccine for the melanoma one after they removed a small tumor and he had partial jaw removal. All was fine until his 6th and final vaccine. His lymph nodes were swollen. I lost him three months later. Still so hard to even say out loud. :( I have heard it is 85% effective. We were the unfortunate 15 percent
