urine killing grass

We have just layed new turf over the last week or so and Tayla's pee is already killing it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this happening. With summer fast approaching the grass is already suffering enough without the big boof adding to its problems. :D

If you have a garden hose handy, you can hose the area down right after she does her business. Dog urine is very high in Nitrogen, which is what is killing the grass. Diluting it will help.

Mary Kay has a good answer. You can also do it with a good watering can. You can use a nitrogen neutralizer/PH balance from the garden center as an added step if there are areas that aren't responding.

Another suggestion is designate a small area (we use the back corner of the yard) and cover with pine straw or similar. Solves a number of problems and keeps the cleanup area to a minimum.

You didn't say if this is a puppy or not, but my guess is that it is. Puppy food creates high nitrogen pee. If it is a grown dog, you might try switching to a lower protein food. My girls, and sometimes there are five of them here, all eat Eukanuba audlt maintenance, and I get no pee spots from them.

There is a product on the market for this, but I can't remember it's name. Call your local garden center or pet store - I'll bet one of them can advise you. Also, new sod is going to be very delicate for awhile till it establishes good roots - that might be contributing to it. Water, water, water!
