Urinating on Prednisone

Brody is on Prednisone for an awful ear infection. On the pill bottle it clearly states that he'd have increased thirst and urination BUT he's outside forever peeing and I'm not sure he's producing anything. He also has to go every one to two hours.

Today I brought him to the gym like I always do. He naps in the car while I work out. He loves it and expects to come with me during nice weather. When I got back to the car he was frantic and I raced home in record time only to watch him pee in the backyard for 5 minutes. I felt so guilty but he just went before my workout.

Now I don't know if something is wrong with his urinary tract. He's also on antibiotics. Thoughts?

Oh and Brody may have LP:(

Frequent urination and thirst are side effects of pred. As long as he is not straining I wouldn't worry too much. If he is not peeing then I'd be worried.

Emma is on 20 Mg and drinks a lot then pees FOREVER! Maybe best to leave him home while he's on it.

Poor Magnum had Prednisone when stung in the face by a bee - he drank copious amounts of water and peed like a racehorse for a week. It's a common side effect.

It does say on the bottle increased thirst and urination but actually seeing it is surprising:)

I'll have to leave him home. I brought him with me to get Indian food in another town and he was restless in the car. Unlike him since it's his absolute most favorite place to be.

Yes...unfortunately that is a side affect of pred. What makes you think he might have LP? Have you contacted Linda or Vanessa about this? Unfortunately, they both are very experienced with this and may be able to help you. Keeping my fingers crossed that Brody is OK. He's a special boy.

I did contact Vanessa.

Brody's breathing has become loud (his bark has not changed), he'll start coughing with the slightest pressure on his collar, his activity level has decreased quite a bit and he seems to be gasping for breath after exercising.

At this point I don't feel the need to put him under to see if he has it. The vet doesn't think it's necessary at this time either.

Cooper was on it a few weeks ago for a tick bite infection/hot spot. He only had it for 4 days (2/day), then 1/day for 4 days. Less than 24 hours in he was peeing like mad. Once he even stood up from a nap, stretched and peed right in front of us in the house! He was pretty embarrassed once he was fully awake!

Now that he's weaned off of it he's gone back to normal but he was peeing much more often and much more copious amounts. Also drinking tons of water.

Hope Brody feels better soon!

Yep...when they're on Pred they have to go out every couple of hours and pee for about 5 mins. Cole had to go 2x while he was out. Endless. And yes, they drink much much more. Don't take away the water tho...they need it!

As it backs down, you'll see a difference...but not a lot until he's at the end of the back down period. And make SURE you back it down exactly as it's prescribed. Then it'll go back to normal.

Amos is on 20 mg Pred daily and he has about a 5 hr time period that he can hold it. Then he goes a LONG time, but he isn't frantic to go out.

Just as everyone has said, it will make them drink more......so they urinate more. It also lowers their immunity......so they can get things like UTIs easily or dermodectic mange.

Put it this way, I let my vet prescribe Prednisone ONCE for one of my Newfs. The peeing and drinking got WAY to much to handle. I live in a condo so I don't have the luxury of a fenced yard.

Unfortunately prednisone is a necessary evil but sometimes a real life saver for animals and humans alike. This is a normal side effect and will disappear as he comes off the pred. How long did the Vet prescribe it for ?? I take pred for Crohns disease but only when necessary and I get on and off as soon as I can. It's a dangerous drug to be on long term.Hope the ear clears quickly and you get things back to normal soon.

He'll be on it 9 days total with the tapering off. He's on one pill a day now and that seems to be fine. I have strict orders that his bowl needs to be filled every time someone walks in the kitchen. Brody is *very fussy about his water.

9 days is good because he will be off it before any real side effect begin and back to normal before you know it. :)
