Hi
Jake is now 12 weeks old, I have been giving him carrots which he loves, can he have other veggies too? Raw? What about tuna.

Thanks
Diane

We supplement regularly with carrots, green beans, broccoli (sp?) and usually a can of tuna or salmon once a week.

Yes, all the above plus cauliflower, asparagus (we toss all the bottoms into the food processor for them and keep the tips for ourselves
.) they can have apples, pears, bananas, lowfat yogurt with wholemilk cultures, and a little bit of apple cider vinegar with mother (healthfood store unfiltered) is good for them in their drinking water. Helps with digestion. Ours also eat sweet potatoes, turnips, collard greens.

Lots of vitamins in all of them. I can't remember everything I give mine. Oh, yes, garlic, I add fresh packed minced garlic to their veggies, sometimes cod liver oil.

I give mine canned mackerel instead of salmon, it's about half the price. They go crazy for it. I also give them canned sardines sometines. I try to keep these fish to once a week.

Ok, so I should be grinding all the veggies up? Oops I have been giving him baby carrots to eat, haven't been grinding.

I would like to start adding natural foods to Lady Bears diet. When you serve the fruits and vegetables do you cut them up into chunks, dice them ect.? Would I cut back on the quantity of dry kibble I give her when adding natural foods? In your opinions what are the 3 best Veggies and fruits to feed? She has no health problems at all (her last check up was 2 weeks ago) but should I talk to her vet before adding natural foods to her diet?
Any suggestions would be helpful at this point.

Thanks

Heh, I forgot all about the fruit. Apples, pears, & banannas are all big winners here also.

We use the fruits and veggies as fillers and do reduce the kibble somewhat. As for sizing the food, we use a processor and take them down to the "lumpy yet on the verg of gooey" phase.

I wouldn't worry too much either Diane, we use baby carrots as treats for our boy but I have read thatfor feeding meals the veggies should be processed to help release the nutrients etc.

Yep Shifty, processing the veggies and fruits is important because dog's intestines are much shorter than ours. And they can't absorb the nutrients out of the whole/chunked pieces in time before it leaves
. That doesn't go for the meats, etc. though, because they are able to digest meat much more easily. In fact they can even digest bones and collect all the nutrients out of them before they pass through the intestines. Raw bones ONLY.
