Two Plus Two Equals...

...Four.
We live along the I & M Towpath and it's like a neat little nature preserve in our backyard. Well, Kala's never learned how to swim, never really desired to and I never pushed her. Truthfully, I was a worry-wart and didn't want her to drown.

I think now, however, that come July and the Great Newf-Net Get-Together, she'll be ready to learn.

Now my story: Daddy took us for a walk which was actually a fishing trip in disguise. Kala sat down and thought "Whatever." until not five minutes later, Daddy pulled in a nice Large mouth Bass. Of course Kala had to see what THAT was - and discovered that it smelled MUCH better than those weird capsules (Omega-3) that Mommy puts in her food dish every morning...

So I watched Kala. Who watches Daddy (continuously). And Daddy takes the fish and puts it back into the water. And Kala screams, "NOOOOO!!!" Mom holds Kala back (can't disturb the fish) and Kala watches Daddy with intense interest. Daddy's got this pole in his hand and then something plops into the water. Then Daddy does the same thing a couple more times and Kala watches. And Kala sees where it lands and wants to go there, too. After a few more minutes, behold! Another fish! This time a Bluegill! Smells yummy, too! Oh, I GOTTA go into the water and get my own fish! If Daddy can do it, so can I...!!!

Jeez, even after almost five years of having my precious girl, she still amazes me. I still continue to see her thinking out loud -

Gosh, no. Daddy was fishing, Kala was learning. But this morning, while on our walk along the same Towpath, the carp were noisy along the shore. I was surprised that didn't interest her. But Kala DID remember where we sat fishing and wanted to go there. She walked about a step or two into the water to investigate. She got a nice little surprise when a fish did brush against her leg/paw. After that, she didn't want any part of the water (sissy). I'm sure if Daddy/aka MY HERO was there, it would have been a different story!

Yes, our Newfs sure are expressive...I swear they think out loud.

Come on Kala, it's about time you joined in the fun. Stoli will teach you and Bailey will save you and Bucca will bark at you from the beach. Can't wait til Stoli's swimming for pure pleasure again. We'll be inviting ourselves out ASAP (even sooner if you make soup!)

I was just thinking the same thing...with all those life-saving Newfies at the get-together, it would be a great place for Kala to start swimming.

Kala may start fishing before she starts swimming...if her Mommy will keep taking her there.

They're amazing to watch while they're fishing!! They're so patient and obsessed!
They'll walk in the water and stand where the fish tend to be (near the shore...about up to their chest in water) then the fish will come and start swimming around them because they're SO STILL!!

Make sure you have a camera for when she decides to be brave!! (It'll take a few times ... or a lot of times...before she gets the hang of it and actually catches one, but she will!!)
