trembling legs

When Misha was just a small (if you can say that with a newf) puppy I noticed that her legs are trembling quite often - with no noticable reason or order. It happened when she stood or when she layed. It didn't seem to bother her at all and all she needed was to move her leg and the shaking would stop.
I've been to the vet but he couldn't tell me anything for certain.

Not long ago I met another newf owner who noticed her legs tremblig. He said that his boys legs also tremble a lot and that it is quite common with newf.

So I wonder does any of you noticed it with your newfs? And is it something to worry about?

I;ve noticed leg trembling in both Maggie & JoJo especially when they are laying on their sides being brushed. I dont know why it happens but its not that bad and it stops when they move the leg. I just figured they were laying funny and pinching a nerve wrong or something

I don't think its seizures. Seizures are generally a brain problem that affect the whole body. Kiori is the resident expert on seizures. If she's around I'd defer to her.

My guess, without more information, is muscle weakness. Getting enough exersize? Did the vet check for muscle atrophy?

My Nani doesn't shake but I'll be sure to look for it in the future. Second opinions are always best for your own piece of mind, though.

TICA sometimes shakes in the legs , doesn't seem to be anything wrong and it never lasts long. I never felt it was bad enough to seek vet advice but nice to know other dogs also have this behaviour.

Doesn't sound seizure-ish. However, neurologically it's possible. I'd look more toward pressure on the spinal cord if this was a constant thing. The thing about seizures - you can't stop them once they start. For example, distracting won't stop a seizure. If you moved your dog and the leg shaking stopped - it's not a seizure. But again - could be nerve pressure. My dog's legs don't shake, but my husband's do

Our golden, Ralph, has been diasgnosed with a neurological disorder in his spine - his legs shake frequently (but don't stop shaking when he moves them), and occasionally, his back legs collapse underneath him. We are now bringing Ralph to a specialist, and while our "normal" vet is great, I am amazed at Ralph's improvement under the care of this specialist. It's odd how closely veterinarian medicine resembles the "human" practice - what with generalists and specialists. Your pup is probably fine, but if you're concerned, a second opinion may help settle your mind.

Thank you all for your answers. I've already been to two different vets about it. They also said it could be somethig neurological - but they weren't speciffic about it and didn't give me any ideas as what to expect. I was quite worried about it. Afraid that Misha would wake up same day not being able to get up... I must say that I feel better knowing that it happenes to others too.

Well I'd say her muscels are fine - she has two daily walks - about an hour each and she loves them. The vet said it's better to keep her fit than to stop with her activities. Don't think I could anyway as she is very energetic and just has to go out when her time comes.

Thanks again, it's really great to be able to turn to someone with my worries.

Just a note to add one more thought ....my sister has a 9 month old German Shepard Dog that had frequent "shaking" in his front legs ...and at times noticable stiffness in his hips and tenderness in all his legs. A trip to the vet (with x-rays) diagnosed panosteitis or "pano" ....a common condition in large breeds. Its very uncomfortable for our puppies ...but the good news is that it is self-limiting as they mature. There is alot of discussion about comnsidering low protein diets, vitamin C, and a number of herbal remedies ..but her vet said nothing "as a rule" appeared helpful. Just be mindful to limit (not eliminate) activity ... and a buffered baby aspirin on those espically difficult days

Love IS a newfie .....

Ese's front legs tremble (never both at the same time) on occassion and at random and he doesn't even seem to notice it. It stops whether he moves them or not. He gets plenty of excercise. It's something I've been a little concerned about so I'm glad you posted this topic and there have been replies saying "it happens". I keep an eye on it...I've noticed the older he gets the less frequently it occurs. (He also gets hiccups a lot!
